Nepal’s floods could generate commercial insurance losses exceeding 20 billion Nepali rupees ($132.3 million), primarily from damaged hydropower projects, Oriental Insurance Company Nepal CEO Toton Chakraborty told Reuters on September 4.

The August 26 disaster damaged homes, bridges, roads and power facilities, according to Nepal’s government. Nepal’s government mobilized security forces and emergency services for rescue and relief. The insurance figures require careful reading. Reuters cited regulatory data showing 583 flood-related claims totaling 25.87 billion rupees as of August 31. Chakraborty said these largely reflected insured exposure pending detailed surveys. They are not confirmed payouts. Worldwide, insurers entered the second half of 2026 after a comparatively moderate start. Swiss Re Institute estimated first-half insured catastrophe losses at $42 billion, the lowest comparable total since 2020.
