A chilling set of newly released images is intensifying scrutiny of the man accused of launching a violent attack during a high-profile Washington gathering, showing him allegedly posing with multiple weapons inside a hotel room just hours before gunfire erupted near the White House Correspondents’ dinner.

Federal prosecutors say the photos, included in a court memorandum seeking to keep the suspect in custody, paint a disturbing picture of preparation, intent, and escalation ahead of the April 25 incident that sent panic through one of the most heavily secured political events in the United States.

New Evidence Presented in Court Filing

Prosecutors filed the images alongside additional details of Cole Tomas Allen’s movements in the hours leading up to the attack, arguing the evidence supports their push to keep him detained pending trial.

Allen, 31, has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

The government says the images show Allen inside his hotel room posing in front of a mirror with weapons strapped to his body, including a sheathed knife, along with a bag containing ammunition.

Authorities allege he carried a semi-automatic handgun, a pump-action shotgun, and three knives as he moved toward a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner held at the Washington Hilton.

Chaos Inside a Heavily Secured Political Event

During the Saturday night incident, President Donald Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, cabinet members, and other officials were evacuated from the ballroom after gunfire broke out inside the hotel.

A Secret Service agent was shot but not seriously wounded, according to officials.

Allen now faces a series of federal charges, including attempted assassination, transportation of a firearm across state lines to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Each carries significant prison time, with some charges carrying maximum sentences of 10 years.

Timeline of Alleged Pre-Attack Behavior

Prosecutors say Allen took photographs of himself at approximately 20:03 EST (1:03 BST) while inside his hotel room, dressed formally and wearing a shoulder holster. Investigators say pliers and wire cutters visible in the images were later recovered.

For roughly the next 30 minutes, prosecutors allege he monitored multiple websites tracking live coverage of the White House Correspondents’ dinner and updates on the president’s attendance before moving toward the venue’s main ballroom.

Authorities also claim Allen discarded a long black coat that had concealed a pump-action shotgun prior to entering the area.

“Shortly thereafter, the defendant rushed the screening checkpoint on the Terrace Level of the Washington Hilton with a raised shotgun,” the memo states.

Investigators say he sprinted through a metal detector while holding the weapon in both hands in a raised position.

Travel Across the Country and Digital Trail

Officials say Allen left his home in Torrance, in the Los Angeles area, on April 21 and traveled by train to Chicago before continuing to Washington.

Prosecutors also cite notes allegedly found on his phone documenting observations during his trip, including: “[t]he southwest desert in spring Distant wind turbines looming like snowy mountains across the hazy NM desert”.

“Administration officials... are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest”

Investigators say Allen sent an email to family shortly before the attack containing the above statement, along with another alleged remark: “I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary,” according to court filings.

Prosecutors Push for Continued Detention

In their filing, prosecutors argue Allen’s actions demonstrate a “premeditated, violent, and calculated to cause death” plan.

“Considering the relevant statutory factors, there is no condition or combination of conditions that will reasonably assure the safety of other people or the community if the defendant were released from custody,” prosecutors wrote.

The case remains pending as federal authorities continue to build their prosecution around the newly released evidence and digital trail allegedly left by Allen in the days leading up to the attack.
