What We Know So Far

  • David Grodnick, a longtime title-insurance executive and real-estate attorney, is believed to have shot his wife Lora and their 24-year-old daughter Sloane before killing himself inside the family's Montgomery Township home.
  • Police first went to the residence Thursday after receiving a welfare-check request but were unable to contact anyone; officers returned Friday and discovered all three family members dead.
  • The motive remains publicly unknown, and an unusual transfer of the family's home from David and Lora to Lora alone seven months before the killings should not be interpreted as evidence of a motive without additional facts.

NEW JERSEY - A welfare check at an upscale New Jersey home ended with a discovery no outward measure of professional success or wealth could have predicted.

Authorities say David Grodnick, 61, shot his wife, Lora Grodnick, 62, and their daughter, Sloane Grodnick, 24, in the head inside their Montgomery Township home before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Lora and Sloane were found in separate bedrooms. David was discovered elsewhere in the residence with a firearm nearby, according to reporting based on information released by investigators. Autopsies determined that the two women's deaths were homicides and David Grodnick's death was a suicide.

The deaths were discovered Friday, October 2, at the family's home on Wild Azalea Lane in Skillman. But the timeline began a day earlier.

Montgomery Township police received a request shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday to conduct a welfare check. Officers went to the house but could not make contact with anyone inside. An investigation into the occupants' whereabouts followed. Police returned Friday and entered the home shortly before 6 p.m., finding the three bodies.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office has described the deaths of Lora and Sloane as an isolated incident and said there is no continuing threat to the public. The broader investigation, however, remains open.

What authorities have not publicly explained is just as important.

No motive has been announced. There has been no public finding tying the killings to Grodnick's employment, finances, marital relationship or any other specific event. That distinction matters in a case where the family's outward circumstances could easily invite speculation.

David Grodnick had spent decades in the title-insurance and commercial real-estate industries. At the time of his death, he was senior vice president and underwriting counsel for Land Services USA. His professional profile described work involving underwriting and nationwide commercial real-estate transactions. Before joining Land Services USA, Grodnick spent roughly two decades with First American Title and had been identified publicly as a regional director in its National Commercial Services division.

The family's nearly 6,000-square-foot home has been valued at roughly $2 million by local reporting. Property records reviewed by USA Herald also reveal a detail that deserves documentation — but not speculation. Records show David and Lora jointly held the property beginning in 2021. On March 2, 2026, ownership was transferred from David Grodnick to Lora Grodnick alone.

There is currently no public evidence establishing that transfer had anything to do with the deaths.

Sloane, meanwhile, was building a life of her own. She graduated from the Hun School of Princeton in 2020 and earned her bachelor's degree from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2024. She was enrolled in a Master of Fine Arts program at the Rhode Island School of Design and was expected to graduate in 2027.

That makes this story larger than the shorthand "insurance executive murder-suicide." Two people were killed — a 62-year-old woman and a 24-year-old graduate student whose life and career were still taking shape.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit or Montgomery Township Police.

Lora and Sloane deserve to be remembered beyond the house price and his job title. I’m glad the article includes something about Sloane’s own life.
