A patio full of diners enjoying a Saturday brunch is usually the picture of relaxation — until a two-ton vehicle turns it into a scene of chaos in the blink of an eye. That's exactly what unfolded at the Jersey Shore, when a 93-year-old driver plowed her Buick SUV directly into a crowded patio, killing one person and injuring seven others.

Where and How It Happened

The crash occurred at Meg's Grill in Lavallette just after 11 a.m., according to reports. Police say the driver appeared to be attempting to park when she hit the gas instead of the brake, sending her Buick Encore careening into the patio where diners were gathered — a split-second pedal mix-up with devastating consequences.

A Life Lost, Several Others Hurt

A 56-year-old woman from Toms River was killed in the accident, according to News 12 New Jersey. The remaining seven injured victims were all transported to a hospital, though the full extent of their injuries wasn't immediately clear in the aftermath.

Damage Beyond the Restaurant Itself

Remarkably, the restaurant building itself appeared to escape structural damage, but the impact wasn't entirely contained — a neighboring liquor store sustained damage to its façade, evidence of just how forceful the collision truly was.

The Restaurant Responds

No restaurant staff members were injured in the crash, though the establishment announced it would close its doors for both Sunday and Monday in the incident's immediate aftermath — a pause seemingly meant to process the tragedy rather than rush back to business as usual.

A Message of Grief and Gratitude

"All of our thoughts and prayers are with the people who were hurt," the restaurant wrote in a statement posted to its Facebook page. The message continued with a plea that resonated well beyond the restaurant's own staff: "Please give an enormous hug to your loved ones tonight. Thank you for all your kind words and thoughts."

For a community accustomed to lazy weekend brunches along the Jersey Shore, this crash serves as a jarring reminder of how quickly an ordinary meal can turn into tragedy — and how, in its aftermath, a simple gesture like hugging the people you love can carry far more weight than usual.
