In the aftermath of 2024's first general election debate, Americans were overwhelmingly displeased. On Thursday night, people took to social media with posts expressing their shock, disappointment, and outrage with the first Trump vs. Biden showdown of this election.

The president's debate performance was uniformly condemned. Even some of his closest allies within the Democratic Party expressed dismay. Multiple news publication and left-wing strategists have since suggested that Biden should suspend his campaign.

During a rally on Friday, the president acknowledged he didn't have the best night while debating Trump. However, a new survey shows Biden could face even bigger problems as he works on convincing Americans to re-elect him.

Biden's team will need to get ahead of this

New polling from CBS News comes on the heels of last week's presidential debate. According to the findings, 72% of the American people feel Biden lacks the health to continue on as commander-in-chief. Only 27% told this pollster that they feel the president's health is adequate.

Meanwhile, just 28% of voters agree with Biden's decision to seek another term in the White House. For those who disagree, more than eight in ten cited his age as a disqualifying factor.

Democrats are virtually split on whether they think Biden should proceed with his campaign. 45% believe he should not be the party's nominee. However, 55% expressed support for the president continuing on towards another term in office.

Where does Biden go from here?

Between now and November, the president will truly have his work cut out for him. Biden will need to not only regain the confidence of his own base, but also that of Independents, swing voters, and potentially disaffected Republicans who could be willing to cast ballots for him.

The president's allies throughout the Democratic establishment are ultimately coming to his defense. Many have argued that Biden had a bad debate night, but a good term in office.

Americans' views on this will inherently differ, depending on their political leanings; however, last week's debate makes it clear Joe Biden now needs to put in the work to convince Americans that he's up for another term.
