Israeli hostage posters

A public defender in New York County, Victoria Ruiz, has managed to keep her job after issuing an apology.  She was identified tearing down Israeli hostage posters.

Ruiz, an attorney with the New York County Defender Services, faced public backlash after she was caught on video tearing down posters displaying images of Israeli children kidnapped by Hamas terrorists. The incident, which occurred amid tensions during the Israel-Hamas war, raised questions about her impartiality and professional conduct in her job.

The Controversial Video

In a viral video shared on social media, Victoria Ruiz can be seen brazenly tearing down one of many posters displayed across New York City. The posters were intended to raise awareness about missing Israeli children, and the person behind the camera repeatedly questioned her actions. "Why are you taking down pictures of missing children?" he asked.

The video was captured by the nonprofit watchdog group StopAntisemitism, further intensifying the scrutiny surrounding Ruiz's behavior.

Apology for tearing up Israeli Hostage Posters

New York County Defender Services, the organization employing Victoria Ruiz, swiftly condemned her actions as "highly insensitive."

Lupe Todd-Medina, a spokesperson for the organization, stated that Ruiz had attended a public vigil in her capacity as a private citizen. Nevertheless, her actions at the event were considered unacceptable, particularly given the bias and insensitivity they conveyed.

After conducting an internal investigation into the incident, New York County Defender Services decided to accept Victoria Ruiz's apology.

She pledged to "do better" in the future. Todd-Medina explained, "Ms. Ruiz has apologized to those who were hurt or confused by her actions. After an internal review, and a pledge by all involved to do better, we accept this apology and now refocus on the vigorous pursuit of our mission: achieving justice and dignity for every individual we represent."

Community Backlash

Ruiz's incident is not an isolated case of individuals vandalizing or tearing down Israeli hostage posters.

New York has witnessed several similar incidents, including an NYU student who lost their job over such an incident and a Brooklyn man who was arrested after engaging in a caught-on-video scuffle while attempting to remove the posters.

The controversial incident involving Victoria Ruiz and Israeli hostage posters has led to discussions about the responsibilities of public defenders and their impartiality.
