These remarks furthermore comprised the caption of a New York Times article titled "A Fourth of July Symbol of Unity That May No Longer Unite." Throughout this piece, the Times made a point of claiming that folks who proudly display or wear the American flag are likely Republicans.

Pushback against the New York Times

To say the New York Times took flak for their stance on the American flag would be an understatement. Many folks noted the timing of the publication's hot take on the American flag; critics pushed back against the negative undertones directed towards the U.S. flag on Independence Day weekend, of all times.
