NTSB Says Learjet Reported Ice And Moderate Turbulence Seconds Before Fatal Florida Plunge

What Investigators Know So Far

  • The Learjet crew reported light clear ice, moderate turbulence and altitude deviations of roughly 700 feet while flying at 35,000 feet.
  • After encountering precipitation, the pilots requested a climb to 37,000 feet—but less than 30 seconds after clearance, the aircraft was descending and a mayday followed.
  • The NTSB says evidence indicates portions of the aircraft may have broken apart before impact, although investigators have not determined why.

GREENACRES, Fla. — Federal investigators have revealed a troubling sequence of events in the final moments of a Learjet 60 that crashed Sunday in Palm Beach County, killing all nine people aboard.

At a Monday news conference, National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman said the aircraft was flying at 35,000 feet at approximately 12:47 p.m. when the crew reported light clear ice and moderate turbulence, along with altitude deviations of approximately 700 feet. The outside temperature was reported at minus 47 degrees Celsius, or roughly minus 53 degrees Fahrenheit.

At that point, the crew said the ice was manageable.

Then the situation changed quickly.

The pilots reported encountering precipitation and requested permission from air traffic control to climb from 35,000 feet to 37,000 feet. Controllers approved the request.

Less than 30 seconds later, the aircraft transmitted that it was descending. A mayday followed. At approximately 12:48 p.m., the crew reported being in an “overspeed condition descending.” The remainder of the transmission could not be understood.

Flight-tracking data reviewed by Flightradar24 shows the aircraft briefly climbed before entering a steep descending right turn. Its recorded vertical descent rate eventually exceeded 32,000 feet per minute, although that figure comes from ADS-B tracking data and is not yet an official NTSB reconstruction.

The Learjet, registration N722BD, had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was headed to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The NTSB said two crew members and seven passengers were aboard. All nine were killed. The FAA registry identifies N722BD as a Learjet 60, serial number 271.

One person on the ground suffered a leg injury.

Another finding disclosed Monday may become especially important.

“We do have some evidence that there was some breakup of the aircraft before impact,” Chapman said.

Investigators have not determined which components separated, when they separated or whether any structural breakup caused the loss of control or occurred after the aircraft was already in an extreme descent. The debris field stretches approximately half a mile and includes homes, businesses and athletic fields.

That distinction matters. Video or photographs showing an aircraft apparently missing a component cannot establish by themselves why that component separated. The sequence must be reconstructed from debris locations, fracture surfaces, radar and ADS-B data, weather information, maintenance records and—if investigators can recover them—flight-recording systems.

Weather is now a major part of that work.

The National Weather Service had warned that an upper-level low moving across Florida would increase moisture and support showers and thunderstorms Sunday. A flood watch covering Palm Beach County specifically warned of repeated bands of rainfall and stronger storms.

But the NTSB has not determined that icing, turbulence or thunderstorms caused the crash.

Investigators also do not yet know whether the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder can be recovered. Maintenance records indicate one had been installed, but the NTSB has not confirmed whether it remained aboard at the time of the accident. Water inside the impact crater is complicating recovery of major wreckage.

For now, the most important evidence is the timeline itself: a crew reporting manageable icing and turbulence, precipitation moments later, a requested climb—and then, within seconds, an aircraft descending at extraordinary speed, and a pilot’s final words... “we’re out of time.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as additional verified information becomes available.
