NYPD Officers Ambushed by Migrants in Violent Encounter Outside Times Square Shelter

NYPD Officers

A group of migrants launched a violent assault on NYPD officers outside a migrant shelter in Times Square, intensifying the debate surrounding the ongoing migrant crisis.

The incident unfolded on Saturday around 8:30 p.m. when two officers and a lieutenant from the NYPD’s Midtown South Precinct attempted to make an arrest outside a shelter on W. 42nd St. near Seventh Ave.

The altercation, captured on video, showcased a chaotic scene as multiple individuals attacked the officers, leaving one lieutenant with a cut to his face.

NYPD Officers respond

The NYPD officers were responding to reports of a disorderly crowd outside the Candler Building, where the city had established a mega-shelter in March.

The facility, with the capacity for hundreds of migrants, has been at the center of controversial policy adjustments, including the implementation of an 11 p.m. curfew aimed at enhancing health and safety.

The assailants, identified as two 19-year-olds, a 24-year-old, and a 21-year-old residing in migrant shelters across Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn, were promptly arrested at the scene.

Four of the suspects were released without bail following arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court, drawing criticism from the city's largest police union.

Police Union Weighs in

Patrick Hendry, President of the Police Benevolent Association, expressed concern over the escalating trend of attacks on police officers.

He attributed this rise to what he called a "revolving door" justice system, making it challenging for officers to effectively combat crime and disorder.

The incident at the Candler Building is not an isolated case.

The city has witnessed a series of violent events linked to migrants, including a September brawl in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. During this confrontation, six individuals were arrested, and two officers sustained injuries when scooters were confiscated.

Police are still on the lookout for five other men involved in the brawl, urging the public to come forward with any information.

Spike in Attacks on Cops

The increasing frequency of attacks on NYPD cops highlights the complexities surrounding the management of migrant arrivals in the city.

With over 100,000 migrants arriving last year and approximately 67,000 currently under the city's care, authorities are grappling with the challenges posed by the migrant crisis.

As the debate rages on, concerns are raised not only about the safety of officers but also the effectiveness of policies implemented by the city administration in response to the surge in migrant arrivals.
