A high-stakes courtroom showdown is peeling back the curtain on one of the most powerful companies in artificial intelligence, and what’s emerging could reshape its future. In explosive testimony, Greg Brockman revealed he holds nearly $30 billion in OpenAI equity and maintains extensive financial ties to CEO Sam Altman, raising urgent questions about influence, loyalty, and control inside the company behind ChatGPT.

The disclosures came under intense questioning from lawyers representing Elon Musk, who is suing OpenAI in a case that could determine whether the AI giant must abandon its for-profit structure and return to its nonprofit roots.

A $30 Billion Revelation

Brockman confirmed in court that his OpenAI stake is worth close to $30 billion, a figure never publicly known until now. The revelation lands at a critical moment, as the company faces mounting scrutiny over its rapid transformation from a nonprofit mission into a profit-driven powerhouse.

At the heart of Musk’s case is a claim that OpenAI betrayed its founding principles, prioritizing profit over safety and public good. His legal team argued that Brockman’s financial entanglements with Altman could compromise his independence.

“I don't know I would say it quite like that.”

That was Brockman’s response when pressed on whether his loyalty to Altman is influenced by those financial ties.

The 2017 Deal That Changed Everything

Courtroom testimony traced the relationship back to 2017, when Altman granted Brockman a stake in his personal family office, then valued at $10 million.

Emails revealed during the trial showed that Jared Birchall flagged the arrangement at the time, warning it could shift Brockman’s allegiance.

"One thing worth mentioning now is that he compensated Greg on the side by giving him a percentage ownership of Sam's personal family office," Birchall wrote.
"Greg is going to have a greater allegiance to Sam as a result of this arrangement."

Musk reportedly forwarded that message directly to Brockman with two question marks, signaling concern even then.

Hidden Stakes in Key AI Ventures

The courtroom drama didn’t stop there.

Brockman disclosed he owns shares in Cerebras, even during periods when OpenAI considered acquiring the company. OpenAI has since indicated it plans to spend heavily on Cerebras chips, underscoring the potential conflict.

He also confirmed a stake in Helion Energy, another Altman-backed venture. Altman has poured hundreds of millions into Helion and recently stepped down from its board as the company explored partnerships with OpenAI.

A Trial That Could Reshape AI’s Future

Now in its second week in a California courtroom, the trial is unfolding against the backdrop of an AI boom that OpenAI helped ignite with ChatGPT’s launch in 2022. Since then, the company has raised over $100 billion, fueling a race for computing power, talent, and dominance in a market some believe could produce a trillion-dollar IPO.

Musk is seeking sweeping consequences, including the removal of Altman and Brockman from leadership and a staggering $150 billion in damages.

Clashing Narratives and Billion-Dollar Stakes

Musk alleges he contributed $38 million and significant support to OpenAI under the promise it would remain a nonprofit focused on safe AI development.

Instead, he claims, the company pivoted to a for-profit model to enrich insiders.

OpenAI has fired back, arguing Musk is motivated by a desire to control the company and is frustrated by its success after leaving its board in 2018. The company also claims Musk is attempting to boost his own AI venture, xAI, which trails OpenAI in user adoption.

Musk, who also leads Tesla and SpaceX, denies those claims.

What Comes Next

As testimony continues, the stakes could not be higher. The outcome may redefine not just OpenAI’s structure, but the rules governing one of the fastest-growing and most consequential industries in the world.

Behind the billions, the battle is ultimately about control, trust, and the future direction of artificial intelligence itself.
