Oracle 6 AM Layoff Email Blindsides Workers Amid AI Spending Surge

Oracle 6 am layoff email

Most people wake up to alarms, coffee, maybe a weather check. For a group of Oracle employees, the day started instead with a message that would upend everything before their first cup of coffee even cooled. Sent around 6 a.m., the email read with brutal simplicity: "We are sharing some difficult news regarding your position... Today is your last working day." No warning shot, no slow build — just an ending delivered before sunrise.

A Layoff Wrapped in Vague Language

According to Business Insider, this latest round of cuts arrives as Oracle continues pouring enormous sums into artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure — a company spending billions on the future while quietly trimming the workforce building its present. Oracle has not disclosed exactly how many employees were swept up in this particular round, leaving the scale of the cuts something of an open question.

The Email That Offered Few Answers

The termination notice informed affected employees that their roles were being eliminated as part of a "broader organisational change" — language that explained everything and nothing at once. Notably, the email provided no individual justification for why any specific person was chosen, leaving workers to parse corporate phrasing for a personal explanation that simply wasn't there.

Access Cut Off Almost as Fast as the News Arrived

Adding to the jolt, employees were told their access to Oracle's computers, email, voicemail and internal files would be deactivated shortly after the notification landed. They were instructed to provide a personal email address just to receive information about severance and other separation paperwork — a stark reminder that once the email hit inboxes, the door was already closing behind it.

Speed That Left Little Room to Process

What made this round particularly jarring wasn't just the layoffs themselves, but the compressed timeline surrounding them. Employees had barely any time between reading the message and losing access to the very systems they'd used just moments before — like watching a door slam shut before you've even finished stepping through it.

Spending Billions Even as Headcounts Shrink

The layoffs land against a striking financial backdrop. Oracle is investing heavily in the data centers and computing infrastructure needed to fuel the ongoing AI boom, spending $28.5 billion on capital expenditures in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 alone — more than triple the $8.5 billion it spent during the same period a year earlier.

A Balancing Act Between Ambition and Caution

Despite the layoffs, Oracle has held firm on its full-year capital expenditure forecast, projecting spending between $90 billion and $95 billion. Demand for its AI cloud services, meanwhile, has remained robust — the company reported signing more than $30 billion in additional AI cloud contracts during the quarter, proof that customer appetite for its offerings hasn't slowed even as internal headcount has.

The Price Tag of Building the Future

Yet that infrastructure buildout doesn't come cheap. Oracle reported negative free cash flow of $5.4 billion for the quarter, underscoring the financial tightrope the company is walking — chasing an enormous AI opportunity while simultaneously tightening its grip on costs elsewhere, including, apparently, its own workforce.

A Year of Shrinking Headcount

This latest round doesn't exist in isolation. Oracle's overall workforce fell by roughly 21,000 employees, or 13%, during fiscal 2026 alone. Its global headcount stood at approximately 141,000 by the end of May, down sharply from about 162,000 just a year earlier — a decline steep enough to reshape the company's internal structure in a single fiscal year.

The Financial Cost of Cutting Staff

Oracle also spent roughly $1.84 billion on severance payments and other restructuring-related costs during the year, with the company citing AI adoption and deployment among the driving factors behind the reductions — technology reshaping not just what Oracle sells, but who gets to keep building it.

For the employees who opened that early-morning email, the message wasn't just about a job ending — it was a glimpse into how quickly a company racing toward an AI-powered future can leave its own workforce behind in the process.
