Oracle carried out what employees described as “significant” job cuts on Tuesday, as the technology company continues to ramp up spending on artificial intelligence.

Michael Shepherd, a senior manager who was not affected, wrote in a LinkedIn post that “senior engineers, architects, operations leaders, program managers, and technical specialists” were among those dismissed.

He emphasized that the layoffs were not tied to employee performance. Oracle declined to comment publicly.

The company has increasingly adopted AI tools internally, with executives previously noting that such technologies allow fewer workers to handle larger workloads.

One employee estimated that around 10,000 jobs have been eliminated so far, pointing to a noticeable decline in active users on Oracle’s internal Slack messaging platform.

Shepherd described the move as a “significant reduction in force,” reiterating that it was unrelated to how employees performed.

“The individuals affected were not let go because of anything they did or didn't do,” he added.

His comments were echoed in dozens of similar posts from workers discussing the layoffs.

Former employee Kendall Levin also wrote on LinkedIn that her role had been “eliminated as part of the company's mass reduction in force.”

Despite the setback, she said she remains “a genuine believer” in the company’s direction.

Other employees reported receiving early morning emails notifying them of their termination, along with offers of one month’s severance pay.

Oracle, one of the world’s largest technology firms, provides software and cloud computing infrastructure to businesses globally.

The company was co-founded by Larry Ellison, who currently serves as chairman and chief technology officer and remains one of the richest individuals worldwide.

Internal discussions about potential job cuts had circulated earlier this year.

Oracle’s messaging around AI-driven efficiency reflects broader trends in the tech industry. Executives such as Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and Block’s Jack Dorsey have similarly suggested that AI can enable companies to operate with leaner workforces.

Both leaders have also overseen layoffs at their respective companies this year.

However, widespread job reductions have become a recurring feature across the technology sector in recent years, with earlier rounds not attributed to AI.

Other firms that have announced layoffs this year include Amazon, Pinterest, and Epic Games.

Stargate Initiative

The workforce reductions come as Oracle accelerates its investment in AI, funding both internal infrastructure and partnerships with companies such as OpenAI.

The company plans to spend at least $50 billion on infrastructure this year and has raised an additional $50 billion in debt to “meet demand” for expanded AI capacity.

Oracle is also participating in the Stargate initiative alongside OpenAI, SoftBank, and MGX, an AI-focused investment fund backed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The $500 billion project aims to expand data center capacity across the United States to support anticipated growth in AI computing needs over the coming years.

“Investing in AI infrastructure is capital-intensive, but our operating model is optimized to ensure profitability,” Oracle co-chief executive Clayton Magouyrk said earlier this month.

“It's unprecedented to scale a capital-intensive business so quickly.”
