"A blockbuster earnings surge just reignited the AI stock battle"

After Monday’s market close, Palantir Technologies delivered a jaw-dropping first-quarter report that is sending shockwaves through the AI investing world.

Revenue skyrocketed 85% year over year, marking the fastest growth rate in the company’s history as a public entity. Even more striking, management boosted its full-year revenue forecast from 61% growth to 71%, signaling that momentum is not just strong, it is accelerating.

With numbers like these, a high-stakes question is emerging across Wall Street.

"Is Palantir coming for Nvidia’s AI crown?"

But beneath the surge lies a critical warning investors cannot ignore.

A great business does not always equal a great stock. And Palantir’s soaring valuation may already be pricing in years of near-perfect execution.

Growth keeps accelerating at a historic pace

Palantir’s growth story is not just strong. It is intensifying.

The company has now logged 11 consecutive quarters of accelerating year-over-year revenue growth. The trajectory tells the story clearly, climbing from 39% to 48% to 63% to 70%, and now hitting a staggering 85% in the latest quarter.

The real engine behind this surge is the United States market.

U.S. revenue jumped 104% year over year to $1.28 billion. This marks the first time growth in that segment has crossed the 100% threshold since the company went public.

The U.S. commercial business exploded 133% to $595 million, while government revenue climbed 84% to $687 million, accelerating sharply from 66% growth in the prior quarter.

Customer expansion is adding fuel to the fire.

Palantir ended the quarter with 615 U.S. commercial clients, up 42% from a year ago, signaling deepening adoption of its AI-driven platforms.

Profitability is surging just as fast.

Net income nearly quadrupled to $871 million. Earnings per share jumped to $0.34, up from just $0.08 a year earlier. Adjusted operating income reached $984 million, delivering a massive 60% margin.

"Our financial results now demonstrate a level of strength that dwarfs the performance of essentially every software company in history at this scale," said Palantir CEO Alex Karp in the company’s first-quarter shareholder letter.

The company’s outlook reinforces that confidence.

Palantir now expects approximately $7.66 billion in revenue for 2026 at the midpoint, implying 71% annual growth. That is a sharp upgrade from prior guidance and a signal that demand for AI-driven analytics is surging, not slowing.

Karp went even further, telling CNBC he expects Palantir’s combined U.S. government and commercial business to double again in 2027.

"The valuation problem investors cannot ignore"

Despite the explosive performance, a major risk is looming.

Palantir’s stock price has already soared to around $144, pushing its market capitalization to roughly $350 billion. That translates into a price-to-sales ratio near 67 and a price-to-earnings ratio close to 150 based on trailing results.

Those numbers are not just high. They are extreme.

Now compare that to Nvidia, the dominant force in AI chips.

Nvidia’s latest fiscal quarter delivered 73% revenue growth, reaching $68.1 billion. Data center revenue surged 75% to $62.3 billion, and the company is guiding for $78 billion in the next quarter, implying roughly 77% growth.

For the full fiscal year, Nvidia generated $216 billion in revenue and $120 billion in net income.

Yet despite similar growth rates, Nvidia trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 41 and a price-to-sales ratio near 23, dramatically lower than Palantir’s multiples.

Its market cap sits near $4.8 trillion, far larger in absolute terms, but significantly cheaper relative to its earnings power.

"Why Nvidia may still hold the edge"

Palantir’s focused bet on high-growth AI software could deliver faster expansion with potentially less cyclicality over time.

But that optimistic scenario appears heavily baked into the current stock price.

Investors are not just paying for growth. They are paying upfront for years of flawless execution in an increasingly competitive AI landscape.

That raises the stakes dramatically.

Even a slight slowdown, missed expectation, or shift in sentiment could trigger a sharp correction.

The bottom line

Palantir’s business is firing on all cylinders, delivering one of the most impressive growth stories in the market today.

But when it comes to choosing between AI heavyweights, Nvidia still appears to offer a more balanced risk-reward profile.

Palantir may continue its meteoric rise.

The question is whether the stock has already gone too far, too fast.

"Should you buy Palantir stock right now?"

Before making a move, investors should take a step back and consider the broader landscape.

The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team recently identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now, and Palantir Technologies did not make the list.

History shows how powerful those selections can be.

When Netflix made the list on December 17, 2004, a $1,000 investment would have grown to $496,473. When Nvidia was selected on April 15, 2005, that same amount would now be worth $1,216,605.

Stock Advisor’s total average return stands at 968%, significantly outperforming the S&P 500’s 202%.

For investors chasing the next AI winner, the stakes are high.

And the difference between hype and value could define who wins and who loses in the next phase of the AI boom.
