What Matters After the Panama Quake

  • A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck southern Panama Friday, damaging homes, businesses, churches, roads and public buildings, while triggering scores of aftershocks. USGS Earthquake
  • The Panama Canal remains operational, an important development for the United States because roughly 76% of canal cargo is connected to U.S. ports.La Prensa Panamá

PANAMA CITY — One of the strongest earthquakes to strike Panama in modern times tore through the country Friday, leaving cracked homes, collapsed structures, damaged roads and shaken communities — but, critically, without shutting down the Panama Canal.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.7, centered roughly 12 kilometers west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba at a shallow depth of 12.6 kilometers. USGS assigned the event its highest-level red PAGER alert for potentially significant economic losses. USGS Earthquake

The human picture remains fluid. No deaths had been officially confirmed early Saturday, although reports from Panamanian authorities cited injuries across several provinces. Homes, schools, hospitals, churches and government structures were damaged. In Penonomé, a hotel partly collapsed, while other historic and public buildings suffered serious damage. Some roads were rendered impassable, temporarily isolating communities. La Prensa Panamá

This was not simply a Panama City high-rise scare.

President José Raúl Mulino described the event as a major disaster after seeing reports of roads that had completely collapsed. Power interruptions affected multiple provinces, schools were closed, and Tocumen International Airport temporarily suspended flights while infrastructure was inspected. It later resumed operations. AFP

Panama sits along the seismically active Pacific region commonly called the Ring of Fire, where movement along tectonic boundaries produces many of the planet’s largest earthquakes. USGS says roughly 81% of the world’s largest earthquakes occur within the broader circum-Pacific seismic belt. USGS

For Americans, what happens next matters far beyond disaster relief.

The United States is the Panama Canal’s largest customer. Panama Canal Authority figures show that in fiscal 2024, 52% of canal transits involved U.S. ports and more than 76% of cargo moving through the waterway originated in or was destined for the United States. Canal officials have also estimated that the route supports more than $270 billion in U.S. cargo annually. Autoridad del Canal de Panamá

That makes Friday’s biggest piece of economic news surprisingly good: the canal did not close.

The Panama Canal Authority said vessel traffic continued normally after inspections. Four Pacific-side office buildings sustained minor damage, and steel structures associated with elevated water tanks at the Monte Esperanza water plant were damaged, but officials reported no disruption to ship transits. Inspections of locks, dams and other critical infrastructure continued. La Prensa Panamá

The greater commercial risk may come from outside the locks — damaged highways, power interruptions, airport disruptions, warehouses, employee access and inland transportation. Even when ships can pass, damaged connections feeding ports and distribution networks can create delays and added costs.

The quake also carries an insurance story. Residential and commercial property losses, business-interruption claims, infrastructure repairs and possible cargo delays could become substantial. Early USGS-related estimates place potential economic losses in a broad range of roughly 1% to 10% of Panama’s GDP, although damage surveys remain incomplete.

Washington has already signaled assistance. Rubio said the State Department was “rapidly mobilizing resources and personnel” after Panama requested help. As of Saturday morning, however, U.S. officials had not publicly detailed the size of the assistance package or identified specific rescue, engineering or medical teams being deployed. EFE Noticias

Panama survived the first major test — keeping the canal open. The harder work now moves inland, where families, businesses and entire communities must determine which damaged structures can be repaired and which cannot.
