A routine international flight turned into a midair security scare Saturday evening when a passenger allegedly attacked a flight attendant and attempted to force his way toward the cockpit as a United Airlines jet prepared to land at Newark Liberty International Airport. The incident triggered an emergency declaration in the final moments of the flight and immediately raised renewed concerns over unruly passenger behavior in U.S. skies.

Authorities say the situation unfolded as the aircraft descended into Newark, turning what should have been a standard landing into a tense security response involving pilots, crew, and air traffic control.

The 48-year-old suspect was detained after landing and taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, according to the Port Authority Police Department. Officials have not released his identity.

One person aboard the aircraft declined medical treatment, and no other injuries were reported, police confirmed.

Midair Emergency Declared as Crew Reports Attack

Communication between the cockpit and air traffic control revealed the seriousness of the incident as it was happening in real time.

“United 1837, we are declaring an emergency. It seems like someone just attacked one of our flight attendants,”

The pilot again says: “A gentleman just attacked one of the flight attendants and trying to open the forward main cabin door.”

The audio highlights the escalating alarm in the cockpit as the situation unfolded while the plane was still in the air, approaching one of the busiest airports in the country.

Flight Origin and Passenger Details Confirmed

The flight had departed from the Dominican Republic and landed safely at Newark on Saturday evening, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

United Airlines confirmed the aircraft was a Boeing 737 Max 8 carrying 170 passengers and six crew members.

In a statement, the airline said, “We’re grateful to our crew for their efforts to ensure the safety of fellow crew members and our customers.”

FAA Launches Investigation as Unruly Passenger Cases Surge

The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the incident.

The case comes amid a continuing rise in disruptive behavior onboard commercial flights. So far this year, airlines have reported nearly 500 unruly passenger incidents, according to FAA data.

Regulators warn that consequences for interfering with airline crew are severe. The FAA states that passengers who assault, threaten, intimidate, or interfere with flight personnel can face penalties of up to 43,658 dollars per violation.

As investigations continue, officials are working to determine exactly what led to the onboard attack and attempted access to restricted cockpit areas during landing.
