Some actors play a role. A rare few lend their voice to a century’s imagination. Sir Patrick Stewart, the star of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard, the X-Men franchise and countless films, TV shows and stage plays, died Oct. 28 at his home in Los Angeles following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. He was 86.

A Family Statement

A statement from his representative confirmed the news. “We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” it reads. “He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all. We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”

A Career Measured in Honors

Stewart, a distinguished stage and screen actor and New York Times best-selling author, had a career spanning nearly six decades. He was a three-time Olivier Award winner and a Tony Award nominee for his stage work, and earned multiple Emmy nominations, plus Golden Globe and SAG Awards nominations, for television and film.

Captain Picard

For seven seasons of the syndicated drama Star Trek: The Next Generation, and several films beginning with Star Trek: Generations in 1994, Stewart played Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the USS Enterprise. He reprised the role in the record-breaking Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard, which won him a Critics Choice Super Award for Best Actor in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series. Its third and final season concluded in April 2023.

He earned four Emmy nominations in four categories, for Moby Dick (1998), The Lion in Winter (2004), Extras (2006) and Hamlet (2010).

Professor X

Stewart was also celebrated as Charles Xavier, Professor X, a role he originated in the 2000 film X-Men and reprised through the franchise’s sequels, including Logan opposite Hugh Jackman. He is set to appear again in Avengers: Doomsday, due Dec. 18, his eighth turn as the character.

Still Making Plans

In a 2023 Q&A with Deadline’s Dominic Patten about his memoir and a desire to play King Lear, Stewart hinted at more work ahead. “I enjoyed the experience so much, but it was my memoir,” he said. “I am not a novelist. I’m not a storyteller in that sense. I know I’m not. But I have some other little ideas which I will keep to myself for the time being. Because sitting here as I did for almost three years clicking away so much, I kind of feel maybe I should give it find something and give it another shot.”

The Memoir

In 2023, Stewart became a New York Times best-selling author with Making It So, chronicling his life from his earliest days in Yorkshire through his long career. It was published by Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. The companion audiobook, read by Stewart, won an Audie Award for Autobiography/Memoir and was named one of the year’s best celebrity memoir recordings by Audible.

Screen and Voice Credits

His screen credits included Steve Martin’s L.A. Story; Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room; Starz’s Blunt Talk; Robin Hood: Men in Tights; Conspiracy Theory; The Lion in Winter; I, Claudius; Moby Dick; Hamlet; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; Ricky Gervais’s Extras; The Kid Who Would Be King; Match; The King of Texas; Jeffrey; Dune; Coda; and Excalibur. He also did voice work on Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy and American Dad and in films such as The Prince of Egypt, Chicken Little and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.

In 2026, he voiced Sir Ritchfield in Amazon MGM Studios’ comedy The Sheep Detectives, opposite Jackman as George, a shepherd who reads detective novels to his sheep until a mysterious incident turns them into detectives.

A Life on the Stage

Stewart won three Olivier Awards, the first in 1979 for Peter Brook’s production of Antony and Cleopatra. His association with the Royal Shakespeare Company included more than 60 productions, among them his Olivier-winning Claudius in Hamlet opposite David Tennant. He was named an Honorary Associate Artist of the RSC.

Broadway and the West End

His Broadway and West End work included his Tony-nominated, Evening Standard Award-winning turn as Macbeth, directed by Rupert Goold, which played the West End, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Broadway. He appeared opposite Ian McKellen in repertory productions of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. Other credits included The Caretaker; A Life in the Theatre; The Master Builder; The Ride Down Mt. Morgan; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; The Merchant of Venice; Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; Twelfth Night; Bingo: Scenes of Money and Death; and The Tempest.

A Christmas Carol

In December 2019, Stewart remounted his Olivier-winning solo show A Christmas Carol, which he adapted himself and in which he played more than 40 characters. He first performed it in 1991, including on Broadway and in London. The 2019 staging, his first in 17 years, was a benefit for City Harvest and Ars Nova. He won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance in 1992.

The Voice

His voice work earned a 1995 Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for the English-language recording of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. In 2026, he voiced all 154 of Shakespeare’s sonnets, with reflections on the process, in Patrick Stewart Performs the Complete Sonnets of William Shakespeare, released by Simon & Schuster Audio on April 7.

Advocacy and Honors

Stewart was a vocal supporter of social justice, women’s rights, domestic abuse advocacy, veterans’ rights, the refugee crisis, animal rights and political reform. Queen Elizabeth II appointed him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2001 New Year Honours, and he was knighted in 2010 for services to drama.

From Mirfield to the Enterprise

Born July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, West Riding of Yorkshire, Stewart left school at 15 to perform in local theater. He made his professional stage debut in 1959 at the Theatre Royal, Bristol, in Cyrano de Bergerac, joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, and made his television debut on Coronation Street in 1967. He debuted on Broadway in 1970 as Snout in Brook’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

A prolific career followed through the ’70s and ’80s, including Excalibur (1981) and Dune (1984). Then, in 1987, with some trepidation over what it would mean for his stage career, he took the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, securing his place in television history.

Survivors and Memorials

Stewart is survived by his wife, Sunny Ozell, an American singer he married in 2013; his son, actor Daniel Stewart; and daughter Sophie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources.

For generations of viewers, the voice that said “Make it so” now belongs to history, and the work he left behind will keep saying it.
