Pennsylvania Traveler’s Maryland Stop Leads to $50,000 Lottery Win

EMMITSBURG, Md., March 31 — A routine stop during a family road trip turned into a $50,000 windfall for a Pennsylvania man, according to Maryland Lottery officials.
David Costella, of Gettysburg, said he was returning home with his daughter and granddaughter earlier this month when they pulled over for a meal at a Rutter’s convenience store on Taneytown Pike in Emmitsburg. During the stop, he purchased a $5 Money Maker scratch-off ticket before continuing the drive.
The ticket went unchecked for about two weeks until Costella’s wife discovered it while tidying up at home and urged him to see if it was a winner.
Costella said he initially wasn’t sure what he was seeing on the ticket, so he gave it to his daughter to scan and she confirmed it was a $50,000 winner.
Lottery officials said the unexpected purchase ended up delivering a significant prize. Costella said he plans to use a portion of the winnings to pay for a family vacation next year.
