Throughout the 2024 presidential election, Democrats have made American democracy a focal point of the conversation. Vice President Harris, her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and others are warning that a second Trump term would bring chaos and threaten democracy in this country.

The sentiment is quite strong with left-wing voters on social media as well. Many are calling for Americans to back the Harris-Walz ticket. In doing so, they also maintain that Trump winning the 2024 race could mean the end of elections for good. Naturally, Republicans are pushing back against this, stating the claims about Trump's impact on democracy are politically motivated exaggerations.

Yet, new polling on the matter is in. According to the findings, most people across the country believe democracy could be in peril.

Associated Press-NORC Research Center releases new survey

Today, the Associated Press-NORC Research Center confirmed 59% of the country agrees democracy is facing certain risks. Just 21% of Americans conversely told the pollster that democracy will endure regardless of whether Harris or Trump wins the November election.

Of the electorate that believes democracy is not guaranteed after 2024, 58% are Republicans and 64% are Democrats.

The findings get even more bleak, though. 18% of the country believes democracy has already fallen and November 5 won't change anything. 37% of Independents hold this view, along with 12% of Democrats and 17% of GOP voters.

Across the board, most Americans agree immigration and the economy will be pivotal factors in the presidential race's outcome. The electorate also largely feels that democracy's future will be impacted by whichever candidate takes the White House after November.

A close race for the Oval Office

Across various polls surveying the general election, Harris and Trump are virtually tied. Certain polls have the vice president ahead of the Republican, while other surveys have the former president edging Harris. In swing states, both 2024 contenders are very close.

Earlier this week, Harris announced Walz as her running mate, citing his work on behalf of the middle class as a major factor. Since then, the two Democrats have hit the ground running, campaigning in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Harris and Trump are consequently expected to keep focusing on these states, as they'll prove vital to garnering 270 Electoral College votes in November.
