Powerball Winner Emerges in Illinois, Snapping a Three-Month Losing Streak

For three months, the Powerball jackpot did what a stubborn boulder does on a hill — it just kept rolling, growing heavier with every drawing that came up empty. On Wednesday night, gravity finally won. A single ticket, sold at a gas station in western Illinois, brought the billion-dollar climb to a sudden, dramatic stop.

Where the Winning Ticket Was Sold

The jackpot-clinching ticket was purchased at a Hy-Vee fuel station in Quincy, a river town roughly 100 miles west of Springfield, hugging the Missouri border, according to Illinois Lottery officials. The numbers that rewrote someone's life overnight: 4-26-66-67-69, with a Powerball number of 9.

As of the announcement, it remained unclear whether the newly minted winner had stepped forward to claim the prize — leaving the identity of the state's newest billionaire-in-waiting shrouded in mystery, at least for now.

Cash Now or Cash Later?

Whoever holds that ticket faces a choice that sounds simple but carries enormous weight: collect roughly $1 billion in installments spread across 29 years, or take a single lump-sum payout of $450.5 million. History offers a strong hint at what's coming — nearly every past winner has chosen the immediate payday over the slow drip of an annuity.

Breaking a Three-Month Silence

Before Wednesday, the jackpot hadn't been claimed since May 2, when a comparatively modest $20 million prize was handed out. Since then, the numbers had piled up drawing after drawing like unanswered mail, swelling the pot into ten-figure territory. This win also marks a milestone of its own: it's the first jackpot claimed since Powerball tickets went on sale in the United Kingdom last month, extending the game's reach across the Atlantic.

The odds standing between any single $2 ticket and this outcome were staggering — one in 292 million, roughly the difference between picking one specific grain of sand from a vast stretch of beach.

Where This Win Ranks

At just over $1.04 billion, Wednesday's prize now sits among the giants, landing as the eighth-largest jackpot in Powerball's history. It joins a short but exclusive club of billion-dollar wins that also includes at least one jackpot claimed through Powerball's rival game, Mega Millions.

A Statement From Lottery Officials

Stephen Durrell, who chairs the Powerball Product Group and serves as executive director of the Kansas Lottery, framed the win as proof of the game's enduring promise. He congratulated Illinois' newest jackpot winner and noted that for more than 30 years, Powerball has demonstrated that fortune can strike anywhere the game is sold — turning a simple $2 wager into a life-altering, even generational, windfall.

Near-Misses Across the Country

Not everyone walked away empty-handed. Four tickets — sold in Arizona, California, Florida and North Carolina — matched five of the six numbers but fell short on the Powerball itself, each earning a $1 million consolation prize. One more near-miss came out of Massachusetts, where a ticket matched the same five numbers; because that player had added the optional $1 "Power Play" multiplier, the payout doubled to $2 million instead of $1 million.

Beyond those headline-grabbing near-wins, more than 3 million additional tickets nationwide collected smaller cash prizes.

What Comes Next

With the top prize claimed, the countdown starts over. The jackpot resets to $20 million ahead of Saturday's drawing, giving hopeful players a fresh — if far smaller — target to chase.

Even so, Wednesday's win doesn't come close to toppling the sport's ultimate record. That distinction still belongs to a Powerball ticket sold in California in 2022, which delivered a jackpot of just over $2 billion — a figure that remains the largest lottery prize ever awarded.
