The Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial has become the center of a new political dispute after former President Joe Biden criticized President Donald Trump over the controversial renovation of the historic Washington, D.C., landmark. During a Democratic Party gala, Biden broke months of relative public silence by mocking Trump's handling of the project, calling him a "loser" while accusing his successor of corruption and mismanagement.

The remarks marked one of Biden's sharpest public attacks on Trump since leaving office in early 2025, adding another chapter to the long-running rivalry between the two political opponents.

Biden Returns to the Political Stage

Speaking before Democratic supporters, Biden aimed Trump's efforts to remake several landmarks in the nation's capital, focusing particularly on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

According to reports, Biden joked that Trump had "hired his own pool guy" to oversee repairs before dismissing the effort with the remark, "Whoa, what a loser."

The speech lasted roughly 10 minutes and represented one of Biden's few major public appearances since departing the White House. Although he has kept a relatively low profile, the former president used the event to criticize what he described as unprecedented corruption within the current administration.

Biden did not address his personal health during the appearance. Last year, it was announced that the 83-year-old former president had been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

A $14 Million Renovation Under Fire

The controversy centers on an extensive renovation project at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, one of the most recognizable landmarks on the National Mall.

The project reportedly cost approximately $14 million. This includes draining the historic pool and resurfacing its basin, as well as applying a specialized blue coating known by officials as an "American flag blue" appearance. This was all planned to be completed ahead of America's 250th anniversary celebrations.

However, the renovation quickly encountered problems.

Within weeks of reopening, sections of the coating reportedly began peeling away, while algae growth turned much of the water green. Crews were dispatched to remove algae and restore water quality as criticism mounted over the project's execution.

Trump Blames Reflecting Pool Damage on Vandalism

President Trump has repeatedly argued that the renovation itself was not responsible for the damage.

Instead, he has claimed that vandals deliberately sabotaged the Reflecting Pool by damaging its protective liner and introducing chemicals into the water. Trump has said those responsible should face severe penalties, including prison sentences of up to 10 years for vandalizing national monuments.

While Trump initially stated that vandals had cut a 250-foot section of the liner, he later told reporters that investigators had discovered what he described as a 350-foot slit, allegedly made with a box cutter or similar blade.

Although Trump has frequently cited vandalism as the cause of the damage, officials have publicly released only limited evidence connecting the deterioration to criminal activity. Court filings from the National Park Service have acknowledged apparent intentional damage to portions of the liner while repairs remain under investigation.

The Reflecting Pool is a Historic National Landmark

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has served as one of America's most recognizable public spaces since it was completed in 1922.

Stretching approximately 2,029 feet long and 167 feet wide, the pool occupies more than 33 acres between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Beyond its architectural beauty, the Reflecting Pool has become a symbol of American democracy and civil rights. It famously served as the backdrop for Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic "I Have a Dream" speech during the 1963 March on Washington.

Because of its historical importance, any renovations or maintenance projects at the site often receive intense public scrutiny.

Reflecting Pool Repairs Expected After July 4

Trump has announced that additional repairs will begin after the Independence Day celebrations conclude in Washington.

The administration says workers will drain portions of the Reflecting Pool, inspect the damaged liner, and make repairs while continuing efforts to improve water quality and prevent additional algae blooms. Heightened security has also been maintained around the site following reports of suspected vandalism.

Whether the ongoing problems stem primarily from construction issues, vandalism, or a combination of both remains a subject of debate. The Reflecting Pool has unexpectedly become both a maintenance challenge and a political flashpoint.
