Imagine being stuck on a floating city for eight months straight, the same faces, the same corridors, the same rationed meals, with no clear date for when the horizon might finally include home. That's the reality facing thousands of US Navy personnel aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln — and now, mounting reports that some of them have grown desperate enough to consider jumping into the ocean itself are forcing Washington to take notice.

A Deployment That Won't End

What began as a routine mission has stretched into something else entirely. The carrier departed California in November, initially bound for the South China Sea, before being redirected to the Middle East ahead of February strikes on Iran. A deployment originally penciled in to wrap up by May has instead been extended again and again, with no firm return date on the calendar. This week, multiple outlets reported the Navy is finally preparing to swap in the USS George Washington as part of a previously planned rotation — though officials have yet to confirm exactly when relief will arrive.

Conditions Onboard Draw Alarm

Life aboard the roughly 5,000-person vessel has reportedly deteriorated into something closer to survival mode than routine service. Military news outlets say sailors have described food shortages, plumbing failures, and bone-deep exhaustion — and, more troubling still, multiple crew members have reportedly weighed jumping overboard as conditions wore them down.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pushed back hard on Thursday, calling the accounts of hardship "completely misrepresented."

Lawmakers Demand Answers

The reports have landed like a flare over Capitol Hill. Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat who sits on the Armed Services Committee, laid out the litany of complaints in a letter to Hegseth — pointing to shortages of essential supplies, tainted water, plumbing breakdowns, worsening mental health, deck safety hazards, and a mail system so backed up that care packages meant for sailors have vanished for months at a time. He warned the situation "warrants immediate attention" and questioned whether the Navy's carrier fleet can keep pace with the operational demands now being placed on it.

Arizona's Sen. Ruben Gallego, also a Democrat, went further, publicly pushing for Congress to send its own delegation aboard to investigate firsthand. "There is no reason to be denied access," he wrote on X.

An Overboard Incident Under Investigation

The concern isn't hypothetical. Citing two unnamed officials, CBS News — the BBC's American news partner — reported that a sailor went overboard earlier this month, was pulled from the water by helicopter, treated onboard, and then evacuated for additional medical care. What led to that moment remains under investigation.

Separate reporting from Military Times and Stars and Stripes, drawing on accounts from sailors' families, described multiple service members contemplating suicide by jumping from the ship — a grim symptom, they said, of prolonged time at sea colliding with strained living conditions.

The Day-to-Day Grind

Beyond the headline-grabbing incidents, the smaller indignities have piled up like sand through an hourglass no one can flip back. Laundry reportedly sat undone for more than a week at a stretch. Fresh food became a rarity, limited by infrequent port visits — and even then, sailors weren't always permitted to step ashore.

California Rep. Mike Levin, a Democrat, summed up the grievances bluntly on social media: mold creeping through showers, toilets that wouldn't flush, laundry machines down for weeks, stretches with no hot water, and a meal reduced to little more than a scoop of rice and a couple of tortillas — with no soap, deodorant, or toothpaste to speak of.

The Navy's Response

Pushing back on the darkest of those reports, a Navy official told the BBC there had been no measurable rise in reported suicidal thoughts or attempts aboard the ship, attributing supply disruptions instead to the ripple effects of combat operations disrupting normal logistics chains. The Navy said it was now prioritizing deliveries in a specific order: food first, hygiene supplies second, mail third.

"Current reports from the ship confirm continuous access to clean water, functional AC (air conditioning), and healthy meal options," the official said Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters in Panama, Hegseth insisted the government works to ensure "every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide them at every single moment," adding that some deployments simply run longer than others. "What they do in those high seas in those austere conditions with less port calls — it's incredible," he said.

White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales, asked about the onboard conditions, said both Hegseth and President Trump remain committed to making sure the military has the resources needed to counter any threat facing the country.

A Pattern Bigger Than One Ship

This isn't the first time long deployments have tested crew morale — during previous extended missions, the Navy has leaned on measures like bingo nights, art sessions, and singing competitions to keep spirits up, according to Stars and Stripes.

But the strain may run deeper than any one deployment. A study of 956 sailors published in January 2025 found that Navy personnel report the highest rates of serious psychological distress among all branches of the US military, pointing to stressors like cramped living conditions, constant noise, and grueling schedules that leave little room for real rest.

Suicide remains a leading cause of death among Navy and Marine Corps personnel, according to an analysis of military data by USNI News, and veterans overall face higher suicide rates than Americans who never served, per Veterans Administration figures.
