A single shipment of peppers has set off a chain reaction stretching from grocery shelves in Texas to distribution centers in Vermont. Taylor Fresh Foods is pulling a wide range of finished products after learning that fresh jalapeños supplied to the company may be carrying something far more dangerous than heat: Salmonella.

How the Recall Began

The trouble started upstream. Coast Citrus Distributors voluntarily recalled its fresh jalapeños over possible Salmonella contamination, and once that notice landed, Taylor Fresh Foods moved quickly, pulling every finished product built around those peppers off the market. Think of it like a single contaminated ingredient tossed into a assembly line — once the source is flagged, everything downstream that touched it has to come back.

Why Salmonella Is No Small Threat

Salmonella isn't just an uncomfortable stomach bug. Health officials warn it can turn genuinely dangerous, even fatal, for young children, elderly people, and anyone with a weakened immune system. For otherwise healthy adults, the infection typically shows up as fever, diarrhea that can turn bloody, nausea, vomiting, and cramping abdominal pain. But in rarer, more severe cases, the bacteria can slip past the gut entirely and invade the bloodstream, triggering complications like arterial infections, heart-valve infections known as endocarditis, and arthritis.

Tracing the Outbreak to Its Source

Federal investigators aren't treating this as an isolated incident. The FDA and CDC, working alongside state and local health departments, are actively investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections tied to fresh jalapeños distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. Their trail led south of the border, to a grower based in Sinaloa, Mexico, identified as the likely origin point of the contamination.

Taylor Fresh Foods has since severed ties with that grower entirely, shifting its jalapeño supply to alternative farms while the investigation continues.

The Scope of the Recall

This isn't a narrow, single-product recall. Taylor Farms has flagged an entire lineup of affected items — both branded and unbranded — now pulled from shelves, with product images and identifying details made available to help consumers check their kitchens.

Where the Recalled Products Landed

The reach of this recall spans more than two dozen states, hitting retail distribution centers across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Anything carrying a "Best If Used By" date on or before Aug. 16, 2026, falls within the recall window.

No Illnesses Reported — For Now

Despite the sweeping scope of the recall, Taylor Fresh Foods says it hasn't received any confirmed reports of illness connected to its jalapeño-containing products. Still, the company isn't waiting for bad news to arrive before acting — a preemptive strike rather than a damage-control scramble.

What Consumers Should Do Now

Anyone holding a recalled product is being urged to skip the taste test entirely: toss it out immediately rather than risk consumption. Refunds are being offered wherever the product was originally purchased.
