Sainsbury to Sell Argos for £120m After a Long Road to the Exit

Sainsbury to sell Argos

Sainsbury's has finally reached the finish line on something it's been chasing for a long time: a buyer for Argos. The supermarket giant confirmed it has agreed to sell the retail brand for £120 million, closing out a prolonged search that took several twists before landing here, as the grocer narrows its focus squarely onto its core food business.

Business as Usual, Sainsbury's Insists

Despite the ownership shakeup, Sainsbury's was quick to reassure everyone that daily life won't skip a beat. Customers, staff and suppliers should expect it to be "business as usual," the company said. Shoppers, in particular, won't notice much difference — Argos will keep operating inside Sainsbury's stores, continue selling Habitat products, and still dish out Nectar points as if nothing changed at all.

Meet the New Owner

The buyer is Swift Partners, a company built specifically for this acquisition and led in part by Richard Pennycook, the former Co-operative Group boss now stepping into a fresh chapter with Argos in his hands.

The Scale of What's Changing Hands

Argos currently operates 667 shops scattered across the UK — 201 of them standalone locations, with the remaining 466 tucked inside Sainsbury's stores like a store within a store. Add to that more than 450 collection points, and the sheer footprint of what Swift Partners is acquiring becomes clear: this isn't a small transaction, it's an entire retail ecosystem changing hands.

From Catalogue Counters to Digital Screens

A Brand Born From Browsing

Argos traces its roots back to 1973, when the concept was refreshingly simple: customers flipped through catalogues in-store, placed their orders, and watched products get delivered straight to the till from warehouses tucked behind the scenes — a system that felt part retail, part magic trick.

That catalogue became something of a cultural fixture. Comedian Bill Bailey once famously dubbed it the "laminated book of dreams," a nickname that stuck around in the public imagination long after its practical use began fading.

The Book That Disappeared

These days, that hefty printed catalogue no longer exists in physical form. Argos has shifted its full product range online, and in-store shoppers now browse via tablet computers instead of flipping laminated pages — a quiet but telling sign of how far retail has evolved since 1973.

Why Sainsbury's Wanted Out

Sainsbury's has spent a considerable stretch of time trying to offload Argos, a brand that's increasingly been viewed as an underperformer weighing down the group's broader ambitions. The supermarket chain originally acquired Argos — along with Habitat and the rest of Home Retail Group's portfolio — back in 2016 for £1.4 billion, a hefty bet at the time. It later sold off Argos's financial services arm, which runs the Argos credit card, for around £720 million in 2024, chipping away at the original package piece by piece.

There was also a near-miss along the way: talks to sell the remainder of Argos to Chinese online retailer JD.com collapsed last September, leaving Sainsbury's back at square one before Swift Partners eventually stepped in.

What Happens to the Workforce

Sainsbury's chief executive Simon Roberts confirmed that all of Argos's nearly 14,000 employees will transfer over to Swift Partners as part of the deal — a detail likely to matter a great deal to staff watching the transaction unfold from the sidelines.

Roberts also reiterated the key continuity points: Argos will keep operating inside Sainsbury's stores, Nectar will remain usable across both brands, and Sainsbury's will continue stocking Habitat products on its shelves.

The New Owner's Vision

Pennycook didn't hold back his enthusiasm for what comes next, saying he believes "strongly in Argos's future and see real opportunities to invest and build on its progress" — language that reads less like a routine acquisition statement and more like a genuine vote of confidence in a brand many had written off.

The deal is expected to close in February next year, and Pennycook has floated the idea of opening new standalone Argos shops down the line. He even left the door open — however slightly — to the possibility of the printed catalogue making some kind of comeback, a nod to nostalgia that surprised more than a few industry watchers.

'Suboptimal Performance' and a Digital Future

A Distraction Finally Removed

Retail expert Catherine Shuttleworth described Argos as having been something of a "distraction" from Sainsbury's core grocery mission. With new owners now able to focus entirely on the brand, she said, Argos has real potential to become a "really digital-first business." She praised the app's user-friendliness and pointed to its click-and-collect model — where shoppers order online and grab their items from an Argos store the same day — as a genuine competitive weapon, one capable of giving online giants like Amazon a "bloody nose."

Years of Questioning the Fit

Retail analyst Clive Black said he'd long questioned whether Argos was ever "wholly aligned" with Sainsbury's grocery-focused business model, calling the drawn-out sale process "challenging and prolonged." He didn't mince words on the financial side either, describing Argos as a "suboptimal performer from a financial perspective" throughout its time under Sainsbury's ownership.

That underperformance showed up clearly in the numbers: Sainsbury's most recent quarterly results showed group-wide sales climbing 3.1%, even as Argos-specific sales slipped 0.5% — a gap that only reinforced the case for a split.

Workers Brace for Change, Union Cautiously Optimistic

Bally Auluk, national officer at Usdaw, the union representing Argos employees, acknowledged that the announcement would inevitably stir some uncertainty among staff. Still, the union welcomed Swift Partners' stated commitment to preserving the existing structure — keeping stores-within-stores, standalone locations, and local fulfilment centers all intact rather than dismantling the model altogether.
