By Samuel A. Lopez | USA Herald - The interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is now fading from view, heading back into deep space after an extraordinary passage through our Solar System. Astronomers spent months studying the object after its discovery in July 2025, making it only the third confirmed interstellar visitor ever detected, following 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov.

The object will make its closest approach to Jupiter on March 16, 2026, before exiting the Solar System on a trajectory that roughly mirrors its incoming path.

While most astronomers believe the object is a natural comet, a growing body of observations has produced a list of unusual characteristics that continue to fuel scientific debate. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb recently outlined twenty-two anomalies associated with the object.

Even so, Loeb himself stopped short of declaring the object technological. On his proposed “Loeb Scale,” which ranks the likelihood that an interstellar object may represent artificial technology, 3I/ATLAS was assigned a level four out of ten. Critics argue that despite highlighting numerous unusual observations, the scale itself has not evolved alongside the growing list of anomalies.

1. Mass Budget Discrepancy
The estimated nucleus diameter of roughly 2.6 kilometers implies a parent population of similar objects that would require far more mass than current models predict for planetary systems around low-metallicity stars.

2. Retrograde Orbital Alignment
3I/ATLAS entered the Solar System on a retrograde trajectory aligned within about five degrees of the ecliptic plane, the flat orbital disk where the planets travel. Statistical estimates suggest the probability of such alignment occurring randomly is extremely small.

3. Arrival Timing
The timing of the object’s path brought it relatively close to both Mars and Jupiter while simultaneously placing it in a position that made it difficult to observe from Earth during perihelion.

4. Jupiter Hill Radius Encounter
During its March 2026 passage, the object will pass approximately 53.6 million kilometers from Jupiter, a distance strikingly close to the planet’s Hill radius, the region where Jupiter’s gravity dominates.

5. Sunward Anti-Tail Jet
Analysis of imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope suggests the prominent anti-tail observed before perihelion may be produced by a highly collimated jet directed toward the Sun rather than a typical comet dust tail.

6. Initial Rotation Alignment
Observations suggest the object’s rotation axis was aligned within roughly eight degrees of the Sun-facing direction when it first entered the Solar System.

7. Jet Wobble Geometry
The observed wobbling motion of the anti-tail implies that the base of the jet lies close to the object’s sun-facing pole, a configuration that would occur rarely by chance.

8. Dual Jet Symmetry
Evidence suggests that jets may originate from opposite poles of the rotating body before and after perihelion, creating a mirrored geometry that researchers say would be statistically unlikely.

9. Thermal Insulation Puzzle
The jet regions appear to activate only when facing the Sun despite spending extended periods on the cold night side of the object, suggesting an unusual internal thermal structure.

10. Perihelion Deflection Coincidence
The object’s gravitational deflection near perihelion measured about sixteen degrees, nearly twice the observed opening angle of the anti-tail jet.

11. Sun–Earth Alignment
On January 22, 2026, 3I/ATLAS briefly aligned with the Sun-Earth axis within less than one degree, during which time the anti-tail pointed toward Earth.

12. Wow Signal Direction
The incoming direction of the object appears within roughly nine degrees of the region associated with the famous Wow! Signal detected in 1977.

13. Triple Jet Pattern
Processing of multiple Hubble images using Larson–Sekanina filtering revealed three smaller jets separated by roughly 120 degrees around the nucleus.

14. Sideways Non-Gravitational Acceleration
Although the object shows acceleration typical of comet outgassing, part of the force appears directed sideways rather than directly away from the Sun.

15. Nickel-Rich Gas Plume
Spectroscopic observations suggest unusually high nickel abundances relative to other elements when compared with thousands of known comets.

16. Dust Particle Mass Paradox
The anti-tail extends hundreds of thousands of kilometers through the solar wind, implying particles that may be larger than typical interstellar dust.

17. SPHEREx Ice and Organic Composition Change
Data from the SPHEREx detected icy fragments around the object before perihelion, while post-perihelion observations revealed the disappearance of ice signatures and the appearance of gas-phase organic molecules alongside a sharp increase in water production.

18. Isotope Ratios
Measurements of hydrogen and carbon isotopes differ significantly from those typically seen in Solar System comets.

19. Methane Timing Puzzle
Methane appeared in the gas plume only after perihelion despite being more volatile than several gases detected earlier.

20. High Mass and Velocity
Estimates suggest the object may be both more massive and moving faster than the two previously observed interstellar visitors.

21. Extreme Polarization
Light scattered from the object shows unusually strong negative polarization compared with other comets.

22. Rapid Perihelion Brightening
Near its closest approach to the Sun, the object brightened unusually quickly while appearing slightly bluer than the Sun itself.

Taken individually, many of these observations may eventually be explained through improved comet models. Taken together, however, the anomalies underscore how little scientists still understand about objects traveling between the stars.

Despite the growing list of puzzles, Loeb continues to place the object at Level 4 on his classification scale, indicating an unusual but still likely natural origin. Whether that assessment ultimately proves correct remains an open question.

For now, 3I/ATLAS is already slipping away into interstellar space, carrying its secrets with it and leaving astronomers with data that will likely be debated for years to come.
