SETI Scientists Hunt For Alien Technology In Moon Dust As Massive Radio Search Flags 25 Signals

What Scientists Are Watching

  • Researchers are proposing a forensic search of lunar soil for microscopic engineered particles that could have survived for billions of years.
  • SETI’s largest Allen Telescope Array campaign has already identified 25 narrowband drifting signals at 10 sky coordinates slated for another look.
  • Neither project has discovered extraterrestrial technology, but both represent a major change in how scientists are looking for it.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is moving beyond the familiar image of scientists simply pointing radio telescopes at distant stars and waiting.

One group wants to examine Moon dust.

Another is using an idea borrowed from game theory to figure out where an extraterrestrial civilization might deliberately send a message if it wanted humans to notice.

And that second search has already produced signals scientists consider interesting enough to check again.

SETI Institute researchers have proposed searching lunar regolith for microscopic pieces of engineered material—particles potentially created by technological civilizations and carried across interstellar space.

The idea sounds extraordinary, but its strength is that it can actually be tested.

Earth is a terrible archive for something that may have arrived hundreds of millions or billions of years ago. Water, weather, plate tectonics and biological activity continually alter the surface.

The Moon is different.

With no flowing water, atmosphere or active plate tectonics, lunar soil has been collecting material from space for roughly four billion years. Researchers argue that durable microscopic artificial particles, if technological civilizations ever produced enough of them, could potentially remain mixed into that record.

The researchers’ underlying study, available through arXiv, explores how lunar material could preserve possible technological debris that would be far harder to identify on Earth.

Their calculations suggest that examining roughly one cubic meter of lunar regolith using microscopy, tomography, spectroscopy and machine-assisted image analysis could begin establishing scientific limits on how much artificial material may have circulated through the Milky Way.

Even finding nothing would matter. A null result would begin placing measurable restrictions on certain scenarios involving widespread technological civilizations rather than simply leaving the question unanswered.

Then there is the radio search.

Researchers Isabel Gerrard and Sofia Sheikh reported this month on what they describe as the SETI Institute’s largest-ever campaign using the Allen Telescope Array.

The new study, available on arXiv, takes a different approach from conventional SETI searches.

Instead of indiscriminately scanning the sky, the project concentrates on the anti-solar point—the location directly opposite the Sun as seen from Earth.

The logic comes partly from game theory.

A “Schelling point” is a place or choice two parties might independently select when they need to find one another without communicating beforehand. SETI researchers are applying that concept to space.

A civilization positioned along the right geometry could detect Earth passing in front of the Sun. If that civilization knew we were here and wanted to transmit a beacon, researchers reason, both sides might independently recognize this geometry as an obvious place and time to communicate.

The survey has completed about 12% of its projected coordinate coverage through 126 observations. Researchers report generating more than 11,000 spectrograms.

Among those examined, 25 spectrograms contained narrowband drifting signals localized toward the anti-solar point, corresponding to 10 coordinates that researchers intend to observe again, according to the October 2026 study.

That finding requires caution.

Scientists are not calling the signals extraterrestrial. Radio-frequency interference can imitate characteristics SETI researchers seek, and repeated observations are essential before unusual signals become scientifically significant.

Still, there is something important happening here.

SETI is increasingly treating the search for alien technology almost like forensic work. Look for physical debris. Identify predictable communication locations. Use machine analysis to eliminate ordinary explanations. Return to anything unusual.

The search is no longer limited to asking whether somebody somewhere is broadcasting.

Scientists are beginning to ask a different question.

If another technological civilization ever existed, what evidence should it have left behind—and where should we look for it?

“If extraterrestrial intelligent beings exist and have reached a high level of technical development, one by-product of their energy metabolism is likely to be the large-scale conversion of starlight into far-infrared radiation.”
