Shooting at Seattle Food Festival Leaves City Reeling as Vigil Draws Hundreds

Shooting at Seattle food festival

Seattle woke up Monday carrying a weight it hadn't asked for. One day after gunfire tore through a beloved community celebration, residents gathered by the hundreds — some in silence, some in tears — to mourn three lives cut short in what should have been an afternoon of cotton candy and food trucks.

By evening, a local fountain had become something closer to a shrine. Candles flickered. Flowers piled up. The city's mayor and police chief stood shoulder to shoulder with grieving strangers, while online fundraisers for two of the victims swelled past tens of thousands of dollars in a matter of hours — proof that grief, like the gunfire itself, spread fast.

Three Names, Three Stories Cut Short

The victims of Sunday's shooting at the annual Bite of Seattle food festival were identified as Junior Cee Niko Semo, 19, Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, 44, and Ashley Whitehead, 56 — a teenager, a father, and a mother, their lives suddenly bound together by tragedy none of them saw coming.

A Father Remembered for His Kindness

Villalba's family described him not through headlines, but through the small, steady kindnesses that defined him. A GoFundMe page painted him as a devoted husband and a father of three, the kind of friend who'd show up without being asked twice.

"His kindness and generosity touched countless lives, and everyone who knew him remembers his gentle spirit and willingness to help others," the fundraiser read. But behind the tributes sits a family now staring down an uncertain road ahead, his sudden absence leaving what relatives called an unfillable void.

The money raised, his family said, will cover funeral costs and help steady a household now missing its center. He leaves behind a wife and three children who must somehow learn to navigate life without him.

A Mother's Last Words to Her Daughter

For Ashley Whitehead, the day began as simply as any other — standing in line with her daughter, waiting on cotton candy, the kind of ordinary moment nobody thinks to memorize. Then the gunshots came, and everything changed in an instant, like a record scratching mid-song.

She was rushed into surgery but didn't survive. Before she went in, her family said, she managed to exchange "heartfelt 'I love you's" with her eldest daughter — a final exchange that now anchors the family's grief.

Whitehead was remembered as someone who soaked up life fully: art, family, connection. "Family was everything to Ashley — she had recently moved to the west coast from Alabama to be closer to Zoie," her fundraiser noted, referring to that same daughter she'd relocated states to be near.

Candles, Silence and a Mayor's Blunt Words

Monday evening's vigil unfolded like a slow exhale after a held breath. Mourners laid flowers. Candles were lit one by one. A moment of silence rippled through the crowd, heavier than words could manage.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson didn't mince words when she addressed the community. "This is not acceptable," she said, condemning the violence that had shattered what should have been a celebration. "No father, no parent should have to bury their child."

Investigators Piece Together a Chaotic Scene

Police believe the puzzle isn't as simple as victim and attacker — investigators suspect that Junior Cee Niko Semo, one of the three killed, may himself have been involved in the exchange of gunfire that claimed his own life alongside two bystanders. One suspect is already in custody; a second remains at large, keeping the investigation very much alive.

A Festival Turned Battleground

What triggered the chaos was described by police as a suspected "gunfight" that broke out near the Space Needle during the festival's final day — a burst of violence that left three dead and four others wounded in its wake, transforming a family-friendly gathering into a crime scene within moments.

The timing made the tragedy sting even harder. Sunday marked the closing day of the three-day, admission-free food festival, an event that typically pulls in roughly 350,000 visitors each year — a sea of families, friends and food lovers that gunfire suddenly scattered.

A Governor's Search for Answers

Even the state's top official struggled to make sense of it. Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson took to social media Monday, capturing a sentiment shared across the region: shock, disbelief, and a community grasping to understand how something so cherished could end so violently.

As Seattle lights candles and counts donations, the bigger question — how a celebration became a crime scene — remains as unresolved as the search for the suspect still on the run.
