Many young adults today grew up loving the Shrek movies.

The first film debuted in 2001, followed by a sequel in 2004, another follow-up film in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010. Each of these movies amassed a popular following for their themes prioritizing love, family, friendship, and staying true to yourself.

Following the most recent one in the series, many people assumed that Shrek was, for all intents and purposes, done. The final film seemed to put a bow on the universe, while also giving its titular protagonist and other characters happy endings.

Earlier this year, many kids-turned-adults who enjoy watching Shrek in their younger years got some fantastic news: the beloved ogre and his friends will be back on the big screen in about two years.

Shrek 5 has been greenlit

DreamWorks Animation announced on X less than 24 hours ago that Shrek 5 will arrive in theaters on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

With it comes the same cast who voiced the series’ animated characters. Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will each reprise their roles as Shrek, Fiona, and Shrek’s friend, Donkey. So far, there is no word on if Antonio Banderas is set to repeat his voiceover role of Puss in Boots.
