Sir Punchalot,’ ‘The Steelman,’ Gone at 70: Country Music Mourns Producer Tommy Detamore

tommy detamore death

Two weeks before he died, Tommy Detamore was being handed one more honor he couldn't be there to receive in person.

On July 23, the country music producer wrote on Facebook to thank the Cowtown Society of Western Music for naming him a "Hero of Western Swing," apologizing that he was unable to attend the Wichita Falls ceremony and crediting a friend for accepting the award on his behalf. It was, in hindsight, one of the last public messages from a man whose name had been quietly stitched into country music for more than four decades.

Detamore died Wednesday, August 5, at age 70. His wife, Sandra, confirmed his death in a Facebook post that began with the kind of sentence no family wants to write.

"It is with a broken heart, I share that my husband of 41 years, Tommy Detamore went home to be with the Lord yesterday, Wednesday, August 5, 2026," she wrote.

A Career Built Behind the Board

To the wider public, Detamore may not have been a household name. Inside the recording booths of Texas country and Western swing, he was something closer to a legend β€” the person artists trusted to shape the sound before anyone else heard it.

He began playing pedal steel guitar in the 1970s and built a career that spanned decades. In 1991, he founded Cherry Ridge Studio in Floresville, Texas, a name that would go on to appear in the credits of records by Ray Price, Jim Lauderdale, Tommy Alverson, James Talley and many others.

Sandra said her husband had recently celebrated another milestone β€” a project he produced and played on had just gone platinum, capping a career that never seemed to slow down.

"His work has and will always leave a lasting mark in the country music community," she wrote. "His God-given gift for playing and producing music allowed him to lift others up and help shape the sound of country music we hear today."

A Man of Many Names

Sandra's tribute made clear that Detamore was known by more than one title inside the studio walls he built.

"Dr. Tom… Sir Punchalot… Drama Papa… The Man… were just a few names people called him," she wrote, a small detail that hinted at just how central he'd become to the people around him β€” mentor, collaborator, and, to some, something closer to family.

"My son Thomas Detamore and I take comfort in knowing he is at peace and is now with his family and that his music will live on and will be cherished forever," she added. "Please continue to pray for me and my family and our Drama Kids Staff as we figure out how to honor my beloved 'Steelman.'"

The cause of death was not disclosed. Sandra said funeral arrangements are still being finalized, with plans to hold a service that allows the community he built to say goodbye properly.

"This way we can all say our goodbyes, since this was so sudden," she said.

The Tributes Poured In

Word of Detamore's death spread quickly through the country music community Wednesday night, and the tributes that followed painted a portrait of a man whose influence stretched far beyond his own studio.

Singer Sunny Sweeney said she had spoken with Detamore just three days before he died, discussing a new project they planned to work on together. "With the most giant broken heart, I want to wish my great friend and mentor, Tommy Detamore, smooth sailing up to heaven," she wrote.

Jim Lauderdale, one of the artists Detamore produced over the years, wrote simply: "Our hearts are with Tommy's family, friends and fans. It's hard to find the right words right now. He will be missed terribly."

Singer-songwriter Gary P. Nunn called working with Detamore "the highlight of my career," describing sessions spent "head to head" with him after the basic tracks were cut. "I was in creative paradise! I will always treasure that experience. Watching him put on the steel tracks was [a] site to behold," Nunn wrote.

The band Tris Munsick and the Innocents remembered him as "a one of a kind musician, producer and human being," while singer Kim Carson, who worked with Detamore on her last three albums, wrote that she "can't imagine recording without Tommy."

Perhaps the most personal tribute came from country artist Jesse Daniel, who said Detamore was the reason he relocated to Texas and spent six years immersed in its country music scene.

"When we moved out to Texas we only knew a handful of people, but he and his family welcomed us with open arms," Daniel wrote. "When the time came to make my next album, Tommy was the natural choice. Over the course of those two albums, he taught me how to make a record."

A Legacy Still Playing

Detamore's death leaves a gap in Texas country music that few single figures could fill β€” a producer whose fingerprints are on records already circulating on radio and streaming platforms, whose platinum success arrived within weeks of his passing, and whose steel guitar work shaped how a genre sounds even for listeners who never learned his name.

For the artists he mentored and the family he leaves behind, the tributes are still arriving. The funeral, still being planned, will be one more chance β€” as Sandra put it β€” to say goodbye to a man so many simply knew as "The Steelman."
