South Carolina AG Candidate David Stumbo Rushed to Hospital Days Before a Critical Runoff Election: What Happened Next Will Surprise You

A dramatic twist has hit South Carolina's heated attorney general race just days before a crucial Republican runoff election. David Stumbo, one of the two candidates fighting for the GOP nomination for state attorney general, was unexpectedly hospitalized over the weekend after falling ill on Saturday morning. The news sent shockwaves through political circles in the Palmetto State, raising urgent questions about what it means for Tuesday's high-stakes vote.

What Exactly Happened to David Stumbo?

Stumbo, who currently serves as solicitor for the state's 8th Judicial Circuit, announced through a social media post on Saturday that he had been admitted to a hospital for an undisclosed ailment. In his own candid words, he wrote: "I woke up not feeling right this morning, and my wife, who's a good deal wiser than I am, told me to go get checked out. The doctor decided to admit me to the hospital to be safe and taken care of right away."

Stumbo added that he is in "good hands" and "in good spirits," and that medical staff expects him to be at "full strength" by Tuesday, when voters head to the polls for the runoff. He did not go into further detail about the nature of his illness, keeping supporters and political observers on edge throughout the weekend.

Despite the alarming situation, Stumbo appeared determined to keep his campaign momentum alive. He stated: "I'm following the doctor's orders to the letter, and I'm not slowing down on what matters: earning the trust and the votes of South Carolinians who want a proven prosecutor as their next Attorney General."

The Race That Has Everyone Talking

This hospitalization comes at arguably the worst possible time for Stumbo's campaign. He and third-term state senator Stephen Goldfinch were set to face Republican voters in a head-to-head matchup for the GOP nomination for attorney general, just three days after Stumbo shared his health news online. Both Goldfinch and Stumbo were the two top vote-getters in the GOP primary held on June 9, 2026.

The stakes could not be higher. They are battling for the Republican nomination for attorney general, hoping to succeed Alan Wilson, who has held the office since 2010. Wilson did not seek another term in 2026, choosing instead to run for governor, a race he seems likely to win. Whoever wins this runoff will carry the Republican banner into the November general election.

Whichever candidate claims the GOP nomination will face Democratic attorney Richard Hricik, who ran unopposed in his party's primary. The last Democrat to hold this office was Travis Medlock, who was first elected in 1982 and served until 1995. That historical context makes this race all the more significant for both parties.

Stumbo Fights Back: A Proven Prosecutor with Big Endorsements

Far from stepping back, Stumbo's campaign quickly moved to reassure supporters and signal that their candidate was ready to fight. A campaign spokesperson stated: "David is doing great and looks forward to being back on the campaign trail tomorrow afternoon." According to the spokesperson, Stumbo was set to host the Greenville stop of the "Ask a Sheriff Tour" on Monday at 11 a.m. outside of the Greenville County Courthouse.

Stumbo has been leaning heavily into his law enforcement credentials throughout this campaign. He has been emphasizing his law-and-order credentials as a local prosecutor in his bid to become South Carolina's top legal authority, stating he has prosecuted hundreds of cases throughout his career across the state, working with sheriffs, police chiefs, the Highway Patrol, and the Department of Natural Resources.

His experience has earned him notable recognition. He earned the endorsement of The Post and Courier newspaper of Charleston, which called him "the clear choice" in the GOP runoff. That kind of endorsement from one of South Carolina's most respected publications carries real weight with undecided Republican voters heading to the polls.

What This Means Going Into Tuesday

Stumbo acknowledged the timing on social media, writing: "No Saturday-before-the-election surprise here, it's South Carolina politics, and the rumor mill's been working overtime." That candid statement was widely praised as a refreshingly honest moment in an otherwise fiercely competitive campaign.

With the June 23 runoff now here, all eyes are on whether David Stumbo's health scare will affect voter turnout and enthusiasm for his campaign, or whether his transparency and fighting spirit will actually rally more South Carolinians to his side on election day.
