South Carolina Jury Clears Store Owner in Fatal Shooting of Teen Cyrus Carmack-Belton, Sparking Outrage and Renewed Calls for Justice

A South Carolina courtroom erupted with emotion Monday after a jury delivered a stunning verdict in one of the state's most closely watched murder trials.

After days of testimony and years of controversy, jurors found Chikei Rick Chow, a convenience store owner accused of fatally shooting 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, not guilty of murder. The decision immediately reignited debate over self-defense, race, gun violence, and the value of a young life.

The case has gripped the nation since the fatal encounter in May 2023, when Chow chased the teenager from his Columbia convenience store and shot him in the back during a pursuit that prosecutors argued never should have happened.

As the verdict was read, cries and sobs echoed through the courtroom from Cyrus' family. Chow remained silent, sitting motionless before slowly lowering his head into his clasped hands.

A Verdict That Divided a Community

The shooting sent shockwaves through Richland County's Black community and drew national attention. Vigils, protests, and calls for accountability followed the teenager's death, turning the case into a symbol of broader concerns about justice and race in America.

For Cyrus' family, Monday's outcome was devastating.

"This makes us feel as if our children don't matter and they do," said attorney and South Carolina legislator Todd Rutherford, standing beside the teen's father after the verdict.

"This makes us feel like Cyrus' life didn't matter and it did."

Rutherford announced that the family intends to pursue a civil lawsuit.

"I've been practicing law for almost 30 years. I've never seen anything like this. I don't understand it," he said.

Two Completely Different Versions of What Happened

Throughout the trial, prosecutors and defense attorneys presented sharply conflicting narratives.

Prosecutors argued that Chow acted out of anger after wrongly believing Carmack-Belton had stolen four bottles of water from the store. They said the teenager never threatened anyone and that the shooting was entirely unnecessary.

According to testimony, Chow chased the teen more than 130 yards from the business before firing the fatal shot.

Solicitor Byron E. Gipson painted a stark picture for jurors.

"He chased a kid down, shot him in the back."

In one of the most memorable moments of closing arguments, Gipson placed a bottle of water before the jury and argued that Chow had valued the teenager's life less than the cost of the merchandise he believed had been taken.

Gipson said Chow "at the end of the day, believed that a human is not more than that."

The Defense's Self-Defense Argument

Defense attorneys insisted the case was never about suspected shoplifting.

Instead, they argued that Chow acted to save his son after Cyrus allegedly pointed a firearm at him.

"This case is not about a shoplifter. This case is about a father who sees a gun pointed at his son and had to make a decision," defense attorney Shaun Kent told jurors.

The defense emphasized testimony from Andy Chow, who claimed the teenager pointed a gun at him during the confrontation.

Lawyers for Chow argued that the store owner faced a split-second decision and chose to protect his son from what he believed was an immediate threat.

Defense attorney Jack Swerling acknowledged the tragedy but defended the jury's decision.

"My heart goes out to them, but 14-year-old kid should not be roaming the streets of Columbia or South Carolina with semiautomatic pistol loaded and ready to fire," he said.

The Central Dispute Over the Gun

One of the trial's most fiercely contested issues centered on whether Carmack-Belton ever threatened anyone with the firearm he was carrying.

Prosecutors acknowledged that the teenager possessed a semiautomatic pistol. However, they argued the weapon fell to the ground during the chase and was never pointed at Chow or his son.

Several witnesses testified that they never saw a gun in the teenager's hands.

Witness Lori Carson described seeing Carmack-Belton running away from the store while appearing frightened.

"He just looked frightened, scared. He looked like he needed help," Carson testified.

"Just like a young child just in trouble, just needed help."

Gipson repeatedly highlighted that multiple witnesses failed to support the defense's version of events.

"Nobody testified that happened that doesn't have the last name Chow," Gipson said.

A Case That Continues Beyond the Courtroom

The verdict may have ended the criminal trial, but it is unlikely to end public debate.

The fatal shooting sparked protests outside the convenience store in 2023, where mourners arranged empty water bottles to spell out "Cyrus." For many residents, the case became about more than a single encounter. It became a question of accountability, community trust, and how deadly force is judged under the law.

Now, with the murder charge behind him, Chow leaves the courtroom cleared of criminal liability. Yet the emotional and social fallout from the shooting remains far from resolved.

For the Carmack-Belton family, the fight for what they believe is justice is entering a new chapter.

And for many watching across South Carolina and beyond, the questions raised by Cyrus Carmack-Belton's death continue long after the jury's final decision.

Maybe don’t take a gun to a shoplifting and you won’t get dead?
I have no pity for this bastard. It should always end this way.
