Why Is It Called the Strawberry Moon?

The name “Strawberry Moon” dates back to Native American traditions and was popularized by the Old Farmer's Almanac, which began publishing full moon names in the 1930s.

The moniker refers to the brief but bountiful strawberry harvesting season in early summer.

Across the Atlantic, Europeans had their own seasonal names. NASA notes that in old European lore, this full moon was called the "Honey Moon," possibly inspiring the modern term “honeymoon,” as June was a popular month for weddings and newlyweds were often gifted mead — a honey-based drink.

Other indigenous names for the June full moon include the "Egg Laying Moon," "Birth Moon," and "Hatching Moon," celebrating fertility, growth, and new beginnings.

When and Where to See It

Astronomers and stargazers will want to look up in the early morning hours of June 11. NASA says the Strawberry Moon will appear near the center of the Milky Way, offering a stunning backdrop for photography and moon-gazing.

Clear skies will be essential, so check your local forecast in advance.

Astrological Meaning: A Fire Sign in the Sky

The 2025 Strawberry Moon rises in Sagittarius, a fire sign known for its passion, energy, and optimism. Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas, speaking to Good Morning America, recommends using this powerful moon phase for cleansing and intention-setting.

“Since full moons are excellent times for releasing, cleansing, or letting go, writing down things you'd like to release from your life or spirit on paper and then burning them can be a cathartic way of working with the energy,” Thomas said.

He also advises incorporating fire elements into your ritual — candles, incense, or sage — to align with Sagittarius’s fiery influence.

More Than Just a Moon

Whether you're watching for its beauty or harnessing its spiritual power, the Strawberry Moon is an invitation to connect with nature, set intentions, and welcome summer’s vibrant energy.
