Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Friday announced the appointment of two new members to the state's 13-member Commission on Judicial Conduct, an unpaid board responsible for investigating judicial misconduct and incapacity and recommending disciplinary actions for judges found guilty of wrongdoing.

The two new appointees are Yinon Weiss, CEO of a tech-sector automotive care company and a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran, and April Aguirre, a nurse, crime victims' advocate, and U.S. Air Force veteran from Pasadena, Texas.

Weiss, based in Austin, has been appointed to a term ending Nov. 19, 2025, while Aguirre will serve a term through Nov. 19, 2029.

Weiss holds degrees from Harvard Business School and the University of California, Berkeley, and has a distinguished military career, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army Reserves, and Special Forces. He has earned decorations such as the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Bronze Star. Weiss is also known for his political commentary.

Aguirre, a critical care registered nurse, is a passionate advocate for crime victims. She testified before Congress last year about crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. She holds a degree in criminal justice from the University of Houston-Downtown and plans to begin law school later this year.

Under the Texas Constitution, the Commission on Judicial Conduct's mission is to protect the public and promote confidence in the judiciary's integrity, independence, competence, and impartiality. The commission is authorized to recommend disciplinary actions for judges, including censure, suspension, or removal.

Abbott’s appointment of Weiss and Aguirre adds to the commission, which is composed of five citizen members appointed by the governor, six judges selected by the Supreme Court of Texas, and two non-judge attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Texas.

The commission is currently chaired by 274th District Judge Gary L. Steel, whose appointment began in late 2023. All appointments to the commission are subject to confirmation by the Texas Senate.
