The First in Two Decades, the Last Until 2090: Europe’s Rare Total Solar Eclipse Arrives Wednesday

when is the solar eclipse

Twenty years since the last one. Sixty-four years until the next. For millions of Europeans, Wednesday evening offers a genuinely rare window to see something most of them will never get another chance at.

A total solar eclipse will pass over a wide band of north and central Spain, along with a sliver of Portugal and parts of Greenland and Iceland, Wednesday evening. The setting sun's light will be dramatically dimmed across much of western Europe as well, including the UK, France, Belgium, Switzerland and northern Italy — even in places that won't see full totality.

The Science Behind the Spectacle

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, casting its shadow across the planet's surface. Viewers standing in the darkest part of that shadow, known as the umbra, experience a total eclipse, where the sun's light is completely blocked. Those in the lighter penumbra see only a partial eclipse, where part of the sun remains visible.

Dr. Megan Argo, a reader in astrophysics at the University of Lancashire and vice-president of the Society for Popular Astronomy, explained why these events remain so rare despite the moon orbiting the Earth every month. Because the moon's orbit is slightly tilted relative to Earth's, it doesn't line up precisely with the sun from our perspective every single time it passes — meaning the geometry has to align almost perfectly for a total eclipse to occur at all. Argo noted that seeing totality specifically requires standing directly in the center of the moon's shadow, a narrow track that covers only a thin strip of the Earth's surface at any given time.

Why This One Matters

Wednesday's eclipse isn't just rare in the abstract — it's rare specifically for this region. It marks the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe in two decades. The last comparable event visible from the UK occurred in 1999, when parts of Devon and Cornwall sat within the path of totality. The next total eclipse visible from the UK isn't expected until 2090.

The UK itself will only experience a partial eclipse this time around, but experts remain genuinely excited about it. Argo described it as the strongest eclipse the UK has seen since 1999 — deeper and more complete in its coverage than the handful of partial eclipses that have occurred in the years since — with the next comparable UK event not expected until 2081.

When and Where to Watch

For viewers in Spain positioned within the path of totality, the eclipse will peak between 20:26 and 20:33 local time, depending on exact location, arriving shortly before sunset.

In the UK, the Royal Observatory Greenwich calculates the partial eclipse will begin in London at 18:17 BST, reach its maximum at 19:13 BST, and conclude by 20:06 BST. Coverage will vary by region: Dr. Carys Herbert, an astronomer at Royal Observatory Greenwich, said viewers in Cornwall can expect roughly 96% coverage, those in western Scotland around 93%, and Londoners approximately 92%.

Herbert noted the eclipse will sit low on the horizon, meaning anyone hoping to watch should find a viewing spot with a clear line of sight to the western horizon, free of buildings or trees blocking the view.

The Safety Warning Experts Keep Repeating

Looking directly at the sun with the naked eye — or relying on ordinary sunglasses — can cause permanent eye damage, and experts are urging viewers to use proper eclipse glasses instead.

The warning isn't hypothetical. During the 2017 US eclipse, Donald Trump drew widespread mockery after looking up at the sun without protective glasses, despite repeated public warnings about the risk. He eventually put on a pair of eclipse glasses.

For anyone without eclipse glasses on hand, Herbert offered an alternative: household items like a colander can be used to create a makeshift pinhole projector, allowing viewers to watch the eclipse indirectly by projecting its light onto card or paper rather than looking at the sun itself.

Assuming clear skies cooperate, the visual effect will build gradually — the moon appearing to take an expanding bite out of the sun's disc until only a thin crescent remains, before the sun slowly returns to full view as the moon continues on its path.

More Than Just a Show

Beyond the visual spectacle, solar eclipses offer scientists a genuine research opportunity. Argo noted there are real scientific applications tied to these events, particularly the chance to study the sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, in ways that aren't possible when the sun's full brightness is visible.

Eclipses have carried scientific weight before. During the 1919 solar eclipse, researchers conducted expeditions specifically to measure the position of stars and planets near the sun — observations that helped confirm Einstein's theory of general relativity.

What Comes After

Herbert pointed out that a solar eclipse means the sun, moon and Earth are aligned in the same plane — which also explains why lunar eclipses tend to occur just weeks before or after a solar eclipse. In this case, a partial lunar eclipse will be visible in the UK just after 5:00 a.m. BST on August 28, producing the reddish "blood moon" effect caused by sunlight bending around the Earth's atmosphere.

There's an additional reason to stay outside after the eclipse fades. The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak overnight between August 12 and 13 — meaning Wednesday's sky could offer more than one reason to keep looking up.
