The Pursuit of Biological Immortality and the Rise of the Brainless Clone Startup

And More ı By Tyler Brooks

A suited businessman wearing gloves holds a glowing brain while two humanoid figures stand inside yellow containment pods behind him, with coins around.

The objective was clear, articulated in the sterile language of a technical roadmap for a 2023 investor letter: the creation of a nonsentient human body, a repository of biological tissue to serve as a perpetual backup for the living. Behind the polished facade of R3 Bio, a Richmond, California, startup recently emerged from years of deliberate obscurity, lay a proposal that pushed the boundaries of medical ethics and human biology into uncharted, and deeply unsettling, territory.

While R3 Bio publicly framed its mission as an effort to revolutionize toxicology testing through the development of nonsentient monkey organ sacks, the reality of its internal ambitions suggested a more profound and controversial goal. Behind closed doors, and in confidential briefings with elite longevity investors, founder John Schloendorn articulated a vision of full body replacement. His pitch, according to those familiar with the discussions, was the cultivation of a human clone lacking a neocortex—a body alive yet devoid of consciousness, maintained as a biological insurance policy for the ultra-wealthy.

The strategy relied on the deliberate exploitation of developmental biology. Schloendorn frequently cited rare birth defects like hydranencephaly, where children are born missing cortical hemispheres, as proof of concept. He posited that by utilizing genetic engineering and CRISPR technology to stunt brain development in utero, a human body could be gestated to adulthood without the capacity for thought, sensation, or suffering.

The institutional framework supporting these efforts exists on the experimental fringe of Silicon Valley, where a network of transhumanists, life extension proponents, and risk-tolerant investors operate under the banner of Vitalism. This philosophy argues for the aggressive reallocation of resources toward the defeat of aging. R3 Bio secured early-stage support from figures including billionaire Tim Draper and funds such as LongGame Ventures. The startup even maintained, by its own admission, a collaborative relationship with Jean Hébert, a former academic now managing projects at the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, where he oversees work on restoring brain tissue.

The technical hurdles, however, remain immense and currently insurmountable. Cloning in primates is notoriously inefficient, marked by high rates of deformity, stillbirth, and systemic failure. Because artificial wombs capable of gestating a human fetus do not exist, the initial realization of such a project would necessitate the use of human surrogates to carry intentionally deformed embryos to term. Even beyond the logistical impossibility of current cloning methods, medical experts warn that the brain stem alone may harbor a baseline of consciousness, raising the specter that any attempt to harvest organs from such a being would constitute a fundamental moral breach.

R3 Bio has issued categorical denials regarding its involvement in human cloning, stating that the company does not work with live non-human primates and has no intent to create human clones or individuals with brain damage. Nevertheless, the company’s internal agendas, leaked meeting notes, and the public statements of its own investors paint a picture of an organization testing the limits of what society might eventually accept as legitimate medicine.

The broader implications are as much about the trajectory of extreme biotechnology as they are about a single firm. The industry is witnessing a shift where, in the pursuit of longevity, the distinction between a medical model and a human being is becoming increasingly blurred. Prominent researchers, including those at Stanford, have begun to discuss the plausibility of manufacturing spare body parts, nudging the Overton window toward radical biological intervention.

History often repeats itself in the intersection of wealth and medical desperation. The narrative of the body swap, once relegated to the realm of speculative science fiction and the casual musings of autocrats, has found a foothold in a movement that views the human body not as a sacred vessel, but as a modular machine. Whether these efforts represent the next frontier of human evolution or a dangerous descent into an ethical abyss remains the defining question. For now, the proponents of this technology continue to work in the shadows, waiting for a moment when the promise of immortality outweighs the profound moral recoil of the public.
