David Parker Ray was convicted in 2001 for kidnapping and torturing multiple women, though he is suspected of far more brutal crimes. Authorities believe he may have abducted, raped, tortured, and murdered as many as 60 victims, operating in a secluded trailer he transformed into a sadistic torture chamber known as “The Toy Box.”

Inside the trailer, investigators found elaborate soundproofing, restraints, surgical tools, and what Ray described as his personalized “dungeon.” Police believe he kidnapped “four to five women a year,” bringing them into the chamber for unspeakable assaults.

A chilling journal entry discovered by investigators revealed Ray’s alleged method for disposing of bodies:
“The thing to do is cut them down the belly, scoop out their guts, fill the chest cavity with cement weights, and then use baling wire to wrap them up,” he reportedly wrote.

Toy Box Killer Accomplices in Murder

Though Ray was never convicted of murder, investigators strongly suspect he killed numerous victims. His partner, Cindy Hendy, claimed he buried or dumped victims in ravines or even in Elephant Butte Lake, where police later discovered human remains.

Another alleged accomplice, Dennis Yancy, testified that he helped Ray kill a woman named Marie Parker in 1997.

Ray’s own daughter, Glenda Jean Ray, was also accused of assisting him at times.

Victim Escapes From Torture Room

Ray’s arrest in 1999 occurred only because of the remarkable escape of survivor Cynthia Vigil Jaramillo, who freed herself after three days of captivity when Ray left for work and Cindy Hendy became distracted. She ran for help wearing only a chain and a padlocked collar.

Ray was convicted of kidnapping and torture and sentenced to 224 years in prison, but died of a heart attack in 2002 — just one year into his sentence.
