“Totally Made Up”: Marco Rubio Shoots Down Report He Is Planning to Leave Trump’s Cabinet as 2028 Chatter Explodes After GOP Midterm Losses

Rubio Denies Plan to Leave Trump Administration After Midterm Losses

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday flatly rejected reports that he is planning to leave the Trump administration, telling The New York Times that serving President Donald Trump through the end of his term has “always been my plan,” as speculation about his political future swirled in the wake of Republican losses in this week’s midterm elections.

The Report That Set Off the Firestorm

Earlier on Thursday, Bloomberg reported that Rubio was weighing whether to depart, had spoken with White House officials about stepping down, and had been asked to stay. The report landed days after Tuesday’s midterms and quickly fueled talk in Washington about whether the nation’s top diplomat, who also serves as national security adviser, might be positioning himself for a 2028 presidential run.

Rubio pushed back hard. “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you,” he told The Times. Asked about his political future, he added: “I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore.”

State Department Hits Back

The State Department’s response was even sharper. Dylan Johnson, the assistant secretary of state for global public affairs, called the Bloomberg article “totally made up.” He also described a separate report in The Independent, which claimed Rubio was planning a 2028 Republican presidential bid, as “completely baseless fake news,” according to Asharq Al-Awsat’s account of the exchange.

Bloomberg’s reporting has not been retracted in the accounts reviewed by USA Herald, and the competing claims leave an unresolved dispute between the news organization and the department.

Why the Rumor Has Legs

Rubio holds an unusual double portfolio, leading the State Department while also serving as national security adviser. That gives him a central role in some of the administration’s most volatile files, including the standoff with Iran, where Trump said Thursday that a decision on whether to resume the war would come soon.

He is also widely viewed as a potential successor to Trump. Days before the midterms, he appeared at a Trump campaign rally and briefly spoke from the podium. With Republicans absorbing losses on Tuesday, every senior Republican’s future has become a subject of intense speculation, and Rubio’s name is near the top of nearly every list.

At the same time, Rubio has previously said he would support Vice President JD Vance if Vance decides to run for president in 2028. Vance is himself regarded as a leading contender, which makes any public move by Rubio politically delicate. His refusal to discuss 2028 any further appears designed to cool that conversation rather than feed it.

What This Means for Foreign Policy

For Americans watching the Middle East, the question is more than political gossip. A sudden departure by the secretary of state in the middle of delicate negotiations would be a significant disruption. Qatari mediators are advancing a draft agreement between Washington and Tehran, and the administration is reportedly weighing new strikes, continued economic pressure, or a deal with major concessions, according to Axios. Continuity at the top of the national security team matters when allies and adversaries are trying to read signals from Washington.

Rubio’s statement that he intends to stay until the end of Trump’s term is meant to send exactly that signal of stability. Whether it settles the matter is another question. Cabinet officials in second terms routinely deny departure plans until the day they announce them, and Rubio’s denial, however emphatic, cannot erase the political incentives surrounding a post-midterm reset.

What to Watch Next

Three things bear watching. First, whether Bloomberg stands by or updates its reporting in response to the State Department’s denial. Second, whether the White House weighs in publicly on Rubio’s status. Third, how the post-election conversation inside the Republican Party develops as potential 2028 contenders carefully calibrate their public statements.

For now, the secretary of state’s position is on the record, and it is unambiguous: he says he is not going anywhere, and he does not want to talk about 2028.

This report is based on coverage by Asharq Al-Awsat, citing The New York Times and Bloomberg. USA Herald will update this story as developments warrant.
