Emergency crews are racing against time in Garden Grove, California, as a massive storage tank at a GKN Aerospace facility threatens to either explode or release thousands of gallons of highly toxic and flammable chemicals into the surrounding area.

Authorities have declared the situation a “crisis,” triggering mandatory evacuation orders for roughly 40,000 Orange County residents and forcing multiple school closures. Dramatic aerial footage from AIR7 showed unmanned fire hoses and automatic sprinklers desperately spraying water on the overheated tank in a frantic attempt to prevent disaster.

The tank contains a dangerous chemical used in plastics manufacturing. Fire officials warn it could fail in one of two terrifying ways.

“There are literally two options left remaining,” Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey said. “One, the tank fails and spills a total of about 6,000 to 7,000 gallons of very bad chemicals… or two, the tank goes into a thermal runaway and blows up, affecting the tanks around them.”

Covey emphasized there is currently no active gas plume or immediate air quality threat, but urged residents to stay far away as crews continue monitoring the situation around the clock.

No injuries have been reported so far, and officials say air quality readings remain within safe limits for now. The cause of the overheating remains unclear.

This high-stakes emergency highlights the hidden dangers lurking in industrial facilities located near densely populated neighborhoods. A single malfunctioning tank now has the potential to trigger either a major environmental disaster or a violent explosion that could impact nearby fuel and chemical storage — all while thousands of families have been forced from their homes.
