A California clothing store owner and dedicated designer, Laura Ann Carleton, was tragically killed after a confrontation over a rainbow Pride flag display outside her business. 

The assailant made disparaging remarks about the flag before fatally shooting Carleton.

Laura Ann Carleton, a mother of nine was a respected figure in the fashion industry. And her clothing store was in Cedar Glen, a picturesque unincorporated community nestled in San Bernardino County, California. 

The incident occurred on Friday during the early evening hours. And it sent shockwaves throughout the local community and beyond.

Carleton's dedication to inclusivity and LGBTQ+ rights was evident not just in the flag she displayed but also in her actions as a supporter and advocate for the community.

Pride Flag Display confrontation

According to reports from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office, Carleton's encounter with her killer began with a confrontation over a rainbow Pride flag proudly displayed outside her store.

 The suspect allegedly directed obscene comments toward the flag before escalating the situation to violence. 

The suspect, who remains unidentified, then fled the scene on foot but was later located by sheriff's deputies near Carleton's store. In a confrontation with law enforcement, he was fatally shot when he refused to drop his weapon.

A Life Remembered

Laura Ann Carleton's life was marked by dedication and passion. She embarked on her fashion career as a teenager and later joined Kenneth Cole Productions, where she rose to an executive position. 

Her website proudly proclaimed her commitment to family, with 28 years of marriage and a blended family of nine children, symbolizing her devotion to love and inclusivity.

The impact of Carleton's loss was felt by her friends and family. And tributes poured in from around the US.

 The Lake Arrowhead LGBTQ organization, of which Carleton was a strong supporter, posted a heartfelt message honoring her contributions. Friends, acquaintances, and prominent figures from the entertainment industry, such as director Paul Feig and actress Bridget Everett, shared their grief and condemned the act of violence.

The tragedy comes in the midst of a rise in anti-LGBTQ+ extremism across the nation. Reports from organizations like the Anti-Defamation League and GLAAD highlight the alarming number of incidents involving harassment, vandalism, and assault targeting the LGBTQ+ community. 

UPDATE: San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus has identified the suspect as Travis Ikeguchi. Witnesses claim he shouted homophobic slurs at Carleton before fatally shooting her and fleeing the scene on foot. When police caught up with Ikeguchi he fired multiple rounds at them before they returned fire killing the man.
