Tropical Storm Humberto has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, bringing new concerns for forecasters who are also monitoring another developing system near the Bahamas. The dual threats raise the possibility of a complicated and unpredictable stretch of tropical weather as the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season enters its late phase.

Path of Tropical Storm Humberto  

As of Wednesday, Humberto — the eighth named storm of the season — was located about 500 miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. The storm is moving west-northwest with sustained winds of 45 mph. Forecasts indicate it could strengthen into a Category 2 or 3 hurricane by the weekend before curving back out to sea.

While it remains uncertain whether Humberto will directly impact Bermuda or other land areas, its potential interaction with nearby systems adds to the complexity. CNN reports that Humberto could “open the door to a variety of wildly different outcomes.”

Another System Brewing: Invest 94L

The second system, known as Invest 94L, is currently a disorganized cluster of thunderstorms over the northeastern Caribbean. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) gives it a high chance of developing into a tropical depression or storm by this weekend as it approaches the Bahamas. If it develops, it will take the next name on the season’s list: Imelda.

Possible outcomes include:

• Invest 94L getting absorbed by Humberto
• The two storms orbiting around one another (a Fujiwhara effect)
• Invest 94L strengthening into Imelda and potentially threatening the U.S. East Coast next week

In the meantime, Invest 94L could bring up to 6 inches of rain to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, raising risks of flash flooding and landslides.

Late-Season Storm Patterns

With October approaching, the focus for storm formation shifts closer to land in the Gulf, Caribbean, and western Atlantic. Late-season systems often bring higher risks to populated areas, even though overall activity typically slows.

The 2025 season has produced seven named storms so far, fewer than the 1991–2020 average of 10 storms by late September. However, those storms have been notably intense. Hurricane Erin rapidly intensified into a Category 5, and Hurricane Gabrielle reached Category 4 earlier this week.

As NHC forecasters warn, late-season storms like last year’s Hurricane Milton, which hit Florida in October, prove that even “after September, the potential for dangerous impacts remains high.”

Residents in the Bahamas and along the U.S. East Coast are urged to closely monitor updates over the coming days as the forecast for Humberto and Invest 94L develops.
