The Trump accounts program offers federal seed money to qualifying children, but parents must opt in and families able to contribute more could gain the largest advantage.

Wall Street’s two largest stock exchanges may soon bring one of their best-known traditions into the White House as the administration promotes Trump Accounts, a new investment program for children.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will jointly ring the opening bell from the Oval Office. He described the planned ceremony as a way to alert parents that the accounts are available, although Reuters reported that neither exchange had independently confirmed the event when he announced it.

Trump Accounts will begin accepting contributions on July 4. Eligible children born from 2025 through 2028 may receive a $1,000 federal deposit, but parents should not expect the money to appear automatically. A parent, guardian, or other authorized adult must open the account and elect to join the federal pilot program.

The launch combines a government-funded investment benefit, private financial management, and a highly visible White House event. It also raises a larger question about who will benefit most over time. Every qualifying child may begin with the same $1,000, but families with thousands of dollars available to invest each year could build much larger accounts.

Who Qualifies for a Trump Account?

Trump Accounts are available to more children than those who qualify for the federal seed money. Parents and other authorized adults may establish an account for a child who has not turned 18 by the end of the election year and has a valid Social Security number.

The $1,000 Treasury contribution follows narrower rules. It applies only to U.S.-citizen children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, who also have valid Social Security numbers.

Families must submit IRS Form 4547 to establish the account and make a separate election to receive the pilot contribution. The government will not automatically create and fund accounts for every qualifying newborn, despite headlines that may make the benefit sound universal.

Contributions to Trump Accounts Begin July 4

Families, employers, charitable organizations, and other eligible contributors may begin adding money to Trump Accounts on July 4. The general annual contribution limit is $5,000.

Employers may contribute up to $2,500 each year. That amount counts toward the overall contribution limit but generally does not count as taxable income to the employee. The federal $1,000 deposit does not reduce what families or employers may add.

Funds must be invested in approved mutual funds or exchange-traded funds that track the S&P 500 or another index made up mainly of American companies. Like other stock-market investments, the account can gain or lose value depending on market conditions.
