The fate of a controversial $1 billion plan tied to a massive White House ballroom has suddenly shifted inside Congress, exposing deep fractures among Republicans and intensifying scrutiny over how federal money tied to immigration enforcement is being allocated.

What was once pitched as a major modernization effort has now been pulled back, at least for the moment, after Senate Republicans signaled there was not enough support to keep the funding in a sweeping $72 billion immigration enforcement package.

Ballroom Funding Pulled Amid Senate Resistance

A key Republican senator confirmed that the proposed funding is no longer expected to survive in the legislation.

“We were told that, and again I haven't looked at the text, but we're told that the ballroom money is out.”

John Kennedy made the remarks after leaving a closed-door meeting of Republican senators, signaling growing unease within the party over the proposal’s viability.

The decision comes as lawmakers struggle to finalize the broader immigration enforcement bill, which has already become a political flashpoint heading into an election cycle.

Senate Leadership Acknowledges Internal Snags

Senate Republicans are still working through unresolved disputes inside the caucus, according to leadership.

John Thune said the group was facing several sticking points that needed to be resolved before the bill could move forward.

“I think there are issues related to the East Wing modernization project,”

Thune said, adding that the caucus was still working through “a couple snags” as negotiations continued among the 53 Republican senators.

One of the most significant unresolved questions is whether roughly $780 million in additional Secret Service funding would remain in place if the ballroom plan is ultimately dropped.

The controversy centers on a sweeping construction proposal linked to the White House.

Donald Trump has overseen the demolition of the East Wing of the White House as part of a plan to replace it with a 90,000-square-foot ballroom designed to accommodate up to 1,000 guests.

The project has been presented as a major architectural upgrade, but it has also drawn criticism over cost, purpose, and funding structure.

Trump originally stated the ballroom would not require federal funding. However, that position has shifted multiple times, eventually leading congressional Republicans to consider $1 billion in taxpayer money. Supporters argued the funds would cover security enhancements for the ballroom as well as broader Secret Service infrastructure needs.

Political Clash Over Immigration and Spending Priorities

The ballroom debate is unfolding alongside a much larger fight over the $72 billion Department of Homeland Security immigration enforcement package.

Democrats argue the department is already sufficiently funded and have pushed for tighter restrictions on enforcement operations. Republicans have rejected those demands, escalating tensions as negotiations continue.

With the immigration bill now central to broader political battles and election messaging, the removal of ballroom funding signals both internal Republican disagreements and growing pressure over how federal dollars are being prioritized in one of the most closely watched spending fights in Congress.
