Trump Extends Iran Ceasefire as Critics Cry “TACO Tuesday” and Doubts Grow Over U.S. Strategy

A fragile ceasefire extension, a stalled diplomatic track, and rising questions about U.S. credibility have collided into a new political and strategic storm for President Donald Trump. As Iran skipped key talks and Vice President JD Vance was left waiting at home, Trump’s decision to extend the pause in U.S. strikes is fueling accusations of weakness and exposing deeper uncertainty about Washington’s approach to the conflict.

Trump Extends Ceasefire as Pressure Mounts
President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, putting U.S. attacks on hold after a request from Pakistan to give Tehran time to submit a proposal and continue negotiations.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that the process was delayed in part because Iran’s leadership was “seriously fractured.”

He said the pause would remain in place until talks conclude one way or another.

Iran’s absence from planned negotiations in Islamabad added to the uncertainty, leaving Vice President JD Vance without a diplomatic meeting to attend.

Critics Mock “TACO Tuesday” as Leadership Questioned
Trump’s decision immediately triggered backlash from critics who revived the “TACO (“Trump always chickens out”) Tuesday” label, arguing he backed away from his own warning that there would be “no more Mr. Nice Guy” if Iran failed to comply.

But supporters of restraint argue the alternative could have meant a deeper war with rising casualties on both sides, raising questions about whether escalation would have served any strategic purpose.

A historical parallel resurfaced in the debate. Former Sen. John Kerry once asked in 1971: “How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?”

Iran Skips Talks as Washington Watches from Afar
Iran’s refusal to attend negotiations in Islamabad marked a significant setback for U.S. diplomatic efforts. The absence left senior American officials, including Vice President JD Vance, waiting as the process stalled.

CNN reported that some top officials believed there was little value in Vance traveling, citing internal Iranian divisions and unclear decision making.

According to those sources, Iran has not responded to U.S. proposals due to a lack of consensus over its position and how to handle its uranium stockpile negotiations.

One complicating factor may be that new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is in hiding and may be unable to transmit clear directions, the sources said.

Questions Grow Over Iran’s Strategy and U.S. Response
The confusion in Tehran may reflect deeper instability, but it also highlights long standing challenges in negotiating with Iran’s leadership structure.

Israeli strikes that eliminated senior officials reportedly weakened Iran’s internal cohesion, potentially making coordinated diplomacy even harder.

Still, skepticism remains over whether Iran’s internal fractures are being used as justification for Washington’s pause in military action.

One Big Failure Revealed
The most significant takeaway from the latest developments is the growing perception that Trump’s strategy of using threats of overwhelming U.S. military force to force Iranian concessions has repeatedly failed.

Inside Iran, this could weaken the credibility of U.S. deterrence.

“It doesn’t matter what the president will say or the vice president or the secretary of war will say. It has zero influence on the Iranian calculus,” Danny Citrinowicz, former head of the Iran branch of Israeli military intelligence, told Jim Sciutto on CNN International.

“From the Iranians’ standpoint, they have the upper hand. And if the US wants to escalate, it will escalate. And if (the US wants) an agreement, they have to accept the 10 points that they sent them through the Pakistanis,” Citrinowicz said.

What Happens Next Remains Unclear
The indefinite ceasefire extension could open a narrow window for diplomacy, but it also risks freezing the conflict in a prolonged state of uncertainty.

If talks drag on for weeks or months, Trump may face growing pressure to maintain the pause, especially if renewed fighting threatens political or economic fallout.

However, Trump’s history of shifting positions raises questions about whether the ceasefire will hold.

Iranian officials reportedly believe previous diplomatic openings were cut short by military action, reinforcing their distrust of U.S. commitments.

Strait of Hormuz and Regional Pressure Points
Even with a ceasefire in place, major risks remain. The Strait of Hormuz continues to be a flashpoint, with Iranian threats keeping global energy markets on edge.

Iran’s leadership is now viewed as more hardline, with military figures gaining influence.

The country still retains highly enriched uranium that could allow it to rebuild nuclear capabilities, even if key infrastructure has been damaged.

At the same time, domestic repression continues inside Iran, adding another layer of instability.

Diplomacy Still Searching for an Exit
Diplomatic actors, including Pakistan and other intermediaries, are now under pressure to find a formula that allows both sides to claim progress.

One proposal under discussion involves lifting a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and ships in exchange for Iran agreeing to ease pressure on the Strait of Hormuz.

Richard Haass, president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, said the pause in military action could help diplomacy reset.

“Giving them some time and putting the ball in their court, letting them propose something rather than jamming them with an American position, I think this is much better,” Haass told CNN’s Kasie Hunt. “We’re not put in the position of putting on the table something that looks unrealistic or, from their point of view, insulting to their dignity or pride.”

High Stakes and Uncertain Outcomes
Despite potential diplomatic openings, there is no guarantee Iran will respond in a way that leads to de escalation. Economic pressure is mounting, but Iranian leaders may be willing to absorb significant hardship rather than уступ strategic leverage.

The global economy also remains vulnerable to disruptions tied to the Strait of Hormuz.

Even if military strikes have weakened Iran’s capabilities, analysts warn that inconsistent U.S. strategy risks long term strategic setbacks.

The coming weeks may determine whether the ceasefire becomes a stepping stone to diplomacy or another pause before renewed confrontation.
