WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Tuesday launched America.gov, a new artificial-intelligence-powered gateway designed to change one of the most frustrating experiences in American life; trying to figure out which federal agency handles what.

The landing page makes the ambition plain: “Hello, America — Whatever you need from government, start here.”

For now, America.gov primarily works as a government information assistant. Users can type or speak questions in everyday language, upload a PDF, and receive answers supported by citations and links to government sources. No account is required simply to ask questions.

The service is operated through the General Services Administration and was developed with the National Design Studio, the federal design organization led by Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia.

Trump described the project in much larger terms during its Washington rollout.

“It’s not just simply a website. It’s a restoration of America’s founding promise, and it’s a reinvention of your government for the 21st century and beyond,” Trump said.

That may sound grand for a government website. But the executive order Trump signed alongside the launch shows why America.gov deserves closer attention.

The order establishes the site as a “unified digital front door” to federal services and directs the GSA, National Design Studio and Office of Management and Budget to connect qualifying agency services to it. Agencies must identify major public-facing services, make existing digital forms and interfaces accessible through America.gov where appropriate, and integrate Login.gov authentication.

Not everything is included. The order defines covered services generally as online federal services reaching more than 100,000 users annually, while specifically excluding IRS tax filing and services involving the Department of War and intelligence agencies. Individual agencies also retain authority over eligibility determinations and their own records.

America.gov is not currently a giant AI agency making benefit decisions. It is an interface sitting in front of existing government systems. The agency legally responsible for Medicare, passports, veterans benefits or another program remains responsible for the underlying decision.

But the administration’s next phase is far more consequential.

America.gov says users will eventually be able to complete applications, forms and renewals through one interface rather than bouncing between agency websites. The White House specifically identifies tasks such as passport renewal and Medicare enrollment.

That convenience also puts privacy and cybersecurity at the center of the project. Trump’s order says agencies must use data minimization, secure authentication and auditable authorization, while expressly stating that America.gov should not create a centralized federal system of records about Americans. It also preserves traditional ways of dealing with agencies — including telephone, mail, in-person service and existing agency websites.

Those protections will matter more once transactions begin.

One AI interface capable of directing millions of Americans through Medicare, passports, benefits and other federal programs could eliminate enormous amounts of bureaucratic friction. The National Design Studio says Americans collectively spend more than 10 billion hours each year navigating government paperwork and processes.

Yet centralization creates its own challenge. If America.gov becomes the place Americans instinctively trust for government answers, errors, incomplete citations, security failures or changes to how sensitive questions are handled become much more important than a mistake on an ordinary website.

The technology may be new. The legal standard is not.

When government decisions affect benefits, rights or legal obligations, the responsible federal agency — not a chatbot — remains accountable under the law.
