Former President Donald Trump appeared at the first day of the 2024 Republican Convention. He announced on Truth Social that 39-year-old Senator JD Vance of Ohio will be his running mate. 

This announcement, made on the opening day of the GOP Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, solidifies Trump’s commitment to be re-elected on the America First agenda.

Trump’s announcement came via his Truth Social platform, where he praised Vance's dedication to American workers and farmers, particularly in key swing states in the Rust Belt.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump posted.

He emphasized Vance's role in championing the interests of the working class across Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and beyond.

The Rise of JD Vance

JD Vance's journey to the national political stage is notable for its dramatic shifts and significant achievements. 

Vance, a former venture capitalist and author of the bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," has transformed from a Trump critic to one of the former president's most ardent supporters

 His memoir, detailed his upbringing in a struggling steel mill town and his roots in Appalachian Kentucky, resonated with many Americans. It was later adapted into a Netflix film.

Born and raised in a working-class family in southwestern Ohio, Vance experienced a tumultuous childhood marked by his parents' divorce and his mother's struggles with substance abuse. 

He was largely raised by his maternal grandparents, who instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. 

After graduating from high school, Vance enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Iraq War. He later attended Ohio State University and earned a law degree from Yale University.

JD Vance is married to Usha Vance. They met and married in law school.

Over the course of Usha's career, she clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh and was an attorney for the firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson.

Vance’s professional journey took him to San Francisco, where he worked as a principal at a venture capital firm owned by billionaire Peter Thiel. Thiel later became a significant financial backer of Vance's successful 2020 Senate campaign.

Political Transformation and Alliance with Trump

Vance was a vocal critic of Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. His stance shifted significantly over time. 

By the 2020 election, Vance had become a strong supporter of Trump, lauding his presidency and advocating for MAGA policies. In a 2021 interview with Fox News, Vance publicly apologized for his earlier criticisms. He also acknowledged that he was wrong about Trump’s capabilities as president.

In the Senate, Vance has been a prominent advocate for Trump’s agenda, particularly opposing U.S. aid to Ukraine.
