For decades, whispers about flying saucers, classified Pentagon programs and possible extraterrestrial encounters have fueled everything from late-night radio shows to Hollywood blockbusters. Now, a new political directive could pull back the curtain — at least partially — on what the U.S. government knows about UFOs and unidentified anomalous phenomena.

Last week, President Donald Trump called for the release of government files related to what officials now commonly refer to as UAPs — unidentified anomalous phenomena — as well as any materials connected to “alien and extraterrestrial life.” The directive has reignited public curiosity and prompted scientists to weigh in on what the documents might actually reveal.

So, will the public finally see proof of alien visitors? Or will the long-anticipated disclosure offer something far more grounded?

Here’s what leading experts say.

A Reality Check from the Pentagon’s Former UFO Investigator

Sean Kirkpatrick, the first director of the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), spent more than a year leading investigations into unexplained aerial incidents. His office was tasked with reviewing military sightings, sensor data and classified reports.

His expectation for the upcoming release? Tempered enthusiasm.

Kirkpatrick has suggested that while the files may contain intriguing cases, people hoping for definitive evidence of alien spacecraft are likely to be disappointed. During his tenure, he said investigations often uncovered more mundane explanations — including misidentified objects, optical effects, or classified human-made technology.

That doesn’t mean the phenomena aren’t interesting. Between mid-2023 and mid-2024, government reporting logged hundreds of new UAP sightings. But “unidentified,” scientists stress, does not automatically mean extraterrestrial.

NASA Scientists: The Universe Is Vast — But Evidence Matters

Federica Bianco, an astrophysicist who served on NASA’s independent UAP study team, believes the broader question of life beyond Earth remains scientifically compelling.

Statistically, she notes, the universe is so enormous that it would be surprising if Earth hosted the only life anywhere. However, she and other researchers emphasize that no publicly reviewed evidence so far demonstrates that UAP sightings violate known laws of physics or require alien explanations.

In science, extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. So far, that bar has not been cleared.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: “Show Me the Alien”

Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium, takes a characteristically direct approach.

If the files contain a confirmed extraterrestrial being, he jokes, no documents would be necessary — the proof would speak for itself.

Tyson argues that many reported sightings can be attributed to unfamiliarity with atmospheric optics, astronomical objects or military technology. In his view, the human tendency to fill knowledge gaps with dramatic explanations often leads to what he calls “aliens of our ignorance.”

In today’s hyperconnected world — where billions of photos and videos are uploaded daily — Tyson also questions how an alien presence could remain successfully hidden.

The “Giggle Factor” and Serious Science

Shelly Wright of the University of California San Diego acknowledges that discussions about UFOs often carry a “giggle factor,” even among scientists. Yet she believes serious inquiry into unexplained phenomena is worthwhile.

Wright points out that much of the data surrounding UAP incidents involves sensitive military surveillance systems. That means many released documents could be heavily redacted to protect national security.

Still, older materials might be declassified without compromising defense capabilities. If so, modern analytical tools could allow researchers to reexamine decades-old data in new ways.

Microbes, Not Martians

For Janna Levin, a professor of physics and astronomy at Barnard College, the real scientific excitement lies not in humanoid visitors, but in microbes.

Astronomers searching for life aren’t necessarily looking for little green beings stepping off spacecraft. Instead, they’re hunting for microscopic life forms — the kind that sparked biology on Earth billions of years ago.

Even within our own solar system, researchers are studying Mars, Europa and Enceladus for signs of microbial activity. If any released documents contain credible evidence of biological traces — even ancient ones — that would be revolutionary.

But advanced alien technology? Levin says scientists aren’t expecting that.

The Galileo Project and the Search for the Truly Anomalous

Avi Loeb, a Harvard astrophysicist and founder of the Galileo Project, is more open to the possibility that a small fraction of cases could defy easy explanation.

Loeb argues that most UAP incidents likely have conventional explanations. However, he believes the scientific method demands that researchers examine outliers carefully.

If even a handful of documented cases appear to operate beyond known human capabilities — and withstand rigorous scrutiny — that would merit serious investigation.

At the same time, Loeb has made clear he is not interested in reverse-engineering secret human weapons. His focus remains on whether evidence points to technologies beyond Earth.

So What Should the Public Expect?

The upcoming file release may bring transparency, context and possibly clearer explanations for past sightings. It could also dispel some long-standing myths.

What it likely won’t deliver, experts say, is a confirmed extraterrestrial encounter.

Still, the broader question remains deeply fascinating: Are we alone in the universe?

Most scientists agree the odds favor life existing somewhere beyond Earth. But whether that life has visited — or is visiting — our planet is a much higher evidentiary hurdle.

As the files become public, researchers and enthusiasts alike will comb through the material. And even if no alien spacecraft emerges from the pages, the release could advance scientific understanding of aerial phenomena, atmospheric physics and surveillance technology.

The truth may not be cinematic. But it will almost certainly be interesting.
