Trump Warns Iran to ‘Stop Now’ as Hormuz Crisis Chokes Global Oil Flow, Sends Prices Toward $100

The world’s most critical oil artery is on the brink—and the fallout is already rippling across global markets. President Trump on Thursday issued a stark warning to Iran to immediately halt reported tolls on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, as fears mount that the vital shipping lane is effectively under Tehran’s control.

At stake: the stability of the global economy, the price of energy, and a fragile ceasefire that appears to be slipping closer to collapse.

The narrow waterway off Iran’s southern coast—through which roughly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil flows—has become the center of a rapidly escalating geopolitical crisis. Despite official claims that the strait remains “open,” the reality on the water tells a different story: ships are not moving.

“They better stop now”

"There are reports that Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Hormuz Strait — They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!" Trump posted to Truth Social, signaling growing alarm inside Washington.

The warning followed a Financial Times report that Iran is seeking to impose a toll of $1 per barrel of oil carried through the strait—payable in cryptocurrency.

Trump doubled down hours later: "Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz. That is not the agreement we have!"

A waterway in paralysis

Behind the scenes, U.S. officials paint a more troubling picture. While one official insisted the strait is “wide open,” they acknowledged a critical reality: vessels are too intimidated to pass.

"Iran has threatened and coerced everybody," the official said.

The U.S. is now weighing options to restore confidence and push ships back into motion—but time is running short.

Meanwhile, energy leaders are sounding the alarm in even clearer terms.

Sultan Al Jaber, head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, wrote bluntly: "This moment requires clarity. So let's be clear: the Strait of Hormuz is not open."

"Access is being restricted, conditioned and controlled. Iran has made clear — through both its statements and actions — that passage is subject to permission, conditions and political leverage."

Thousands stranded, billions at risk

The consequences are already severe.

Hundreds of tankers loaded with oil and critical commodities are stalled, waiting for safe passage, according to The New York Times. Crews remain in limbo, unsure how to proceed without risking confrontation or attack.

Nearly 20,000 mariners are effectively stranded in the Persian Gulf, the International Maritime Organization reports—caught in a high-stakes standoff with no clear resolution.

Oil surges, tensions rise

Markets are reacting fast. Oil prices are once again nearing $100 per barrel, significantly above pre-war levels, as traders brace for prolonged disruption.

At the heart of the crisis is a new hardline stance from Iran’s leadership.

Iran "will bring the management of the Strait of Hormuz into a new stage" during negotiations with the U.S., Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said Thursday—raising the possibility that tolls could become a long-term reality.

Such a move would not only keep energy prices elevated but also challenge long-standing international norms guaranteeing free navigation.

In a broader message, Khamenei struck a defiant tone.

Iran is the "definite victor" of the war, he said, insisting the country "did not seek war and does not seek it" now—but warning it "will not withdraw from our rightful rights."

"We will certainly not leave the aggressors. We will demand compensation for all damages and the price for the blood of martyrs and the compensation of the wounded," he added.

A ceasefire under pressure

All of this unfolds as the U.S. and Iran prepare for high-stakes peace talks in Islamabad this Saturday. But the situation on the ground suggests the ceasefire is growing increasingly fragile.

Each passing day without resolution raises the risk of further escalation—and deeper economic shock.

What to watch

The next flashpoint may come from beyond the strait itself. If Israel’s continued strikes in Lebanon intensify, Iran could tighten its grip on Hormuz even further—effectively choking off a lifeline that carries about 25% of the world’s seaborne oil.

For now, the world is watching a dangerous standoff unfold—one tanker, one threat, and one decision at a time.
