The legal fight over a trust fund established by filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, has taken a dramatic turn. Their son, Nick Reiner, reportedly seeks access to a 1.5 million dollars trust fund. This is money left for him while he awaits trial on charges that he murdered both of his parents.

According to reports, Nick Reiner filed a petition seeking the release of trust fund assets that he claims became available when he turned 30-years-old. The request comes as he faces two counts of first-degree murder related to the deaths of his parents in December 2025.

Petition Seeks Access to Family Trust Fund

Reports indicate that Rob and Michele Reiner established trust funds for their children—Nick, Romy, and Jake—in 1992. Nick's recent court filing reportedly argues that the trustee has failed to distribute money he believes he is entitled to receive under the terms of the trust.

According to documents reviewed by TMZ, Nick contends that he needs the funds to pay for his legal defense. He reportedly attempted to retain prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson but claimed the trustee would not authorize payment for Jackson's legal services.

Nick's filing reportedly states that “time is of the essence” because he has no other financial resources available while incarcerated. He is seeking an accounting of the trust and damages related to what he characterizes as delays in administering the funds.

Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty

Los Angeles prosecutors have charged Nick Reiner with two counts of first-degree murder stemming from the deaths of his parents.

Authorities allege that Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were killed at their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Dec. 14, 2025. Nick was arrested the same day and has remained in custody since then.

Court records indicate that he has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.

The case drew significant public attention due to Rob Reiner's long career as a filmmaker, actor, and producer. Throughout the proceedings, prosecutors have maintained that the evidence supports the murder allegations, while the defense has challenged aspects of the investigation.

Jackson Withdraws from Defense; Could Not Access Trust Fund

Attorney Alan Jackson appeared alongside Nick Reiner during earlier court proceedings, including his arraignment at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles.

However, Jackson later withdrew from the case. According to reports, Nick claimed that the trustee's refusal to release trust assets prevented him from continuing to retain Jackson's services.

Nick is now reportedly represented by the county Public Defender's Office.

Meanwhile, TMZ reported that Nick's siblings, Romy and Jake Reiner, do not intend to finance a private attorney for their brother.

Can Someone Inherit from a Person They Are Accused of Killing?

One of the most significant legal questions raised by the case involves whether an individual accused of murdering a parent can receive money from that parent's estate or trust.

Under California law and the laws of most states, a legal principle known as the "Slayer Rule" generally prevents someone who unlawfully and intentionally kills another person from benefiting financially from the victim's death. The rule is designed to ensure that individuals do not profit from their alleged wrongdoing.

However, the rule typically applies only after a court determines that the killing occurred under circumstances that trigger the statute. Until a criminal conviction or other legal finding is reached, disputes can arise over whether trust assets should be distributed, frozen, or held pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

As a result, courts often face complex questions involving trust administration, inheritance rights, and constitutional protections for criminal defendants.

Trust Fund Money Needed to Answer Autopsy Questions

During a preliminary hearing held on April 29, reports indicated that autopsies for Rob and Michele Reiner had not yet been completed more than four months after their deaths.

The status of those examinations could play a role in future court proceedings as prosecutors and defense attorneys continue preparing for trial.

For now, the trust dispute adds another layer of complexity to an already high-profile criminal case, one that combines allegations of family violence, inheritance questions, and the legal principle that individuals generally cannot profit from the deaths of those they are accused of killing.
