A U.S.-born mother of four says she was handcuffed, shackled, and held for hours in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Louisiana after agents at a Lafayette checkpoint falsely claimed her state ID and Social Security card were fake. She was released only after an attorney intervened, raising urgent questions about wrongful detention, immigration enforcement practices, and civil rights violations.

CHECKPOINT ENCOUNTER TURNS INTO ARREST

LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA
On Wednesday morning, Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained a U.S.-born woman at a checkpoint in a residential area of Lafayette.

The young mother, who is Spanish-speaking and has four children, was already worried as she approached the area because her baby daughter had a high fever. When deputies requested identification, she presented her Louisiana state-issued ID and Social Security card.

Despite that, officers claimed the documents were fake and detained her anyway.

"I WASN’T HIDING ANYTHING"

The woman described approaching the checkpoint on foot around 8 a.m. after being alerted to ICE activity near her apartment complex.

At first, she believed there would be no issue.

"I wasn’t hiding anything," she explained through a translator. "I’m not doing anything illegal."

But deputies and agents insisted her documents were fraudulent and questioned her repeatedly about her birthplace. ICE agents later echoed the accusation, she said, escalating the situation.

One agent allegedly told her, "Who is making these IDs in numbers for you guys? Because I also have another one from another person, and it looks just like this. So they are fake. Yours is fake too."

When she attempted to respond, she says she was ordered to remain silent.

DETENTION, SHACKLING, AND INTERROGATION

For roughly 20 minutes, she was made to wait as agents made phone calls and discussed her case. She says they repeatedly returned claiming her identification was forged.

Agents then placed her in a white unmarked vehicle and transported her to what appears to be an unlisted federal immigration office in Lafayette. There, she was handcuffed and shackled at the ankles.

She was interrogated and pressured to identify who allegedly produced the “fake papers,” she said.

The woman pleaded for officials to verify her identity using Colorado state records and provided additional documents from her phone, including IRS tax paperwork.

Her detention comes amid growing scrutiny of aggressive immigration enforcement tactics, including warrantless arrests and mistaken identity cases involving U.S. citizens.

DOCUMENTS CONFIRMED AS VALID

The Lens reviewed copies of her identification and confirmed authenticity using Louisiana’s LA Wallet digital credential system, which verified her license as valid with matching photo, name, and date of birth.

A birth certificate reviewed by The Lens also confirms she was born in Colorado, matching her stated citizenship.

Despite this, she says officers continued to insist she was using forged documents.

"THEY KEPT TELLING ME I’M A CRIMINAL"

She described what she called a pattern of accusations during detention.

"They kept telling me I’m a criminal because I’m showing false papers, and that my penalty was going to be much higher because I’m hiding the person who created them."

TRANSFER TO SOUTH LOUISIANA ICE FACILITY

After hours of detention, she was transported to the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center in Basile, operated by GEO Group.

She arrived in the evening and was held in a shared detention area with others awaiting deportation.

She remained there for about five hours before being released around 2 a.m. after immigration attorney Bridget Pranzatelli intervened and sent documentation verifying her citizenship.

ICE returned her to Lafayette but did not provide an explanation, she said, and kept her Social Security card.

ORDER OF SUPERVISION DESPITE U.S. CITIZENSHIP

Although she is a U.S. citizen, she says ICE issued her documents including an “Order of Supervision,” requiring her to report back to the agency next month and restricting her movement.

One document also references continued efforts to obtain travel documentation for removal, language typically used in deportation proceedings.

She plans to attend the required check-in with legal counsel to correct the record.

NEIGHBOR RUSHED TO PROVE HER IDENTITY

A neighbor who witnessed the checkpoint described law enforcement vehicles setting up early in the morning at the apartment complex entrance, where many residents are Black and Hispanic.

He said many residents avoided leaving for work due to fear.

After learning of her detention, he retrieved her birth certificate from her family and brought it to ICE.

Officials reportedly rejected it, questioning its authenticity.

"They said, ‘Oh, we need the original copy…because this could be AI.’"

He said tensions escalated when agents refused to reconsider her case.

SHACKLED TRANSFER AND HOURS IN DETENTION

She was transported to Basile around 6 p.m., shackled at the ankles, and booked into the ICE facility.

She described thinking constantly about her children, especially her infant daughter with a high fever.

"The whole time that I was there, I was just thinking about my kids and being afraid for my little one," she said.

LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT PARTNERSHIP UNDER SCRUTINY

The detention occurred in Lafayette Parish, where local deputies operate under a 287(g) agreement with ICE, allowing them to assist in immigration enforcement.

Sheriff Mark Garber has defended the partnership, saying it helps determine immigration status more efficiently. Critics argue it increases racial profiling risks and leads to wrongful detentions.

Staff Sgt. Chris Cormier of the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the encounter but maintained the ID was fake.

"She approached our deputies with her phony ID," Cormier said. "She approached us, okay? She approached us. She had a fake ID."

He added that deputies rely on databases to determine authenticity.

"Our databases will tell us that it’s fake or not."

Cormier also said she was transferred because she could not prove citizenship and suggested ICE handles further verification.

LEGAL AND CIVIL RIGHTS CONCERNS MOUNT

Immigration attorney Bridget Pranzatelli said the case reflects broader concerns about wrongful detentions and inadequate verification before arrest.

She emphasized that U.S. citizens should never be held in immigration custody.

Experts have long criticized a “detain first, investigate second” approach in immigration enforcement, warning it can lead to serious civil rights violations.

COMMUNITY IMPACT AND NEXT STEPS

Residents near the checkpoint said the operation caused widespread fear, with some avoiding work due to concerns about being stopped.

The woman now plans to pursue legal action against both ICE and the sheriff’s office, saying the experience has deeply affected her family.

"My kids have trauma," she said.
