UAE To Quit OPEC after decades, shaking global oil power balance

UAE To Quit OPEC

The headline UAE To Quit OPEC is set to reshape the global energy landscape as the United Arab Emirates prepares to leave the oil-producing alliance next month, ending nearly six decades of membership in a move that could ripple through global markets like a seismic shockwave.

The United Arab Emirates confirmed it will withdraw from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its broader OPEC+ alliance, a coalition that has long coordinated global oil production among major exporting nations.

Officials in Abu Dhabi said the decision reflects a long-term strategy to expand production capacity and respond more freely to global energy demand without the constraints of group quotas.

A break from nearly 60 years of coordination

From founding era to fragmentation

OPEC was established in 1960 by five founding members—Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela—to stabilize oil markets and protect producer revenues.

The UAE joined the bloc in 1967, later becoming one of its most significant and compliant producers. Its departure now leaves OPEC with 11 members and reduces output influence by roughly 15%, according to industry estimates.

Global reactions and political undertones

A win for Washington, pressure on Riyadh

The move is widely seen as a strategic win for Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized OPEC for keeping oil prices elevated and urged producers to increase supply.

Analysts say the exit could deepen ties between Abu Dhabi and Washington, while adding pressure on Saudi Arabia to manage internal cohesion within the cartel.

One energy analyst described the decision as “the beginning of the end” for OPEC’s influence as a unified force.

Market uncertainty and long-term impact

Prices, production, and volatility ahead

Experts warn that while immediate supply changes may be limited, the longer-term consequences could reshape global oil dynamics.

Economists suggest the UAE could increase production by around one million barrels per day outside OPEC constraints, potentially influencing global prices and increasing market volatility.

Energy analysts at Capital Economics noted that while prices could soften in the long run, instability may rise if other members reconsider their commitments.

Why the UAE is leaving

Production ambitions versus quota limits

Energy experts say the decision has been building for years. The UAE has invested heavily in expanding production capacity but has often clashed with OPEC quotas that limit output.

With one of the lowest production break-even costs in the region, the UAE is positioned to profit even at lower prices, giving it greater incentive to pump more oil independently.

A reshaped energy order

Wider geopolitical implications

Analysts warn that the exit could mark a broader shift in Middle Eastern energy politics, potentially weakening collective control over supply.

If other producers follow suit or adjust output strategies, the global oil system could transition from coordinated control to competitive expansion—turning OPEC’s long-standing structure into a looser and less predictable framework.

For now, the UAE’s departure signals more than a policy shift. It marks a fracture in one of the most influential economic alliances in modern history.
