Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt, alongside TV writer Jordan Blum, have created a cult-hit comic book which features a universe of Minor Threats.

This imaginative world centers on characters who are often overlooked—D-list villains with compelling backstories. 

The Minor Threats universe continues to expand, drawing in celebrated creators, producing spin-offs, and even heading to Netflix as a live-action mini-series.

Universe of Minor Threats Features Star Creators

The universe of Minor Threats is broadening its horizons with an anthology mini-series featuring some of the most renowned creators in the comic book industry. 

Matt Fraction, acclaimed for his Eisner Award-winning work on Marvel’s Hawkeye, and Brian Michael Bendis, co-creator of Miles Morales, are among the writers contributing to this exciting project.

Illustrators Michael Allred and Gene Ha, both recipients of prestigious awards, are joining the series, with Laura Allred handling colors and Nate Piekos on lettering. Other prominent contributors include writers Gail Simone and Gerry Duggan, alongside artists Soo Lee and Mark Torres.

The four-issue anthology project, titled From the World of Minor Threats: Welcome to Twilight City, will blend new and established characters and is set to be published by Dark Horse Entertainment next year.

First Issue Release 

The series will kick off on March 12, 2025, with the first issue crafted by Fraction and Allred. Subsequent issues will feature diverse creative teams:

• Issue No. 2: Written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Soo Lee (The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos).
• Issue No. 3: Written by Gail Simone (Uncanny X-Men) and drawn by Gene Ha (Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons).
• Issue No. 4: Written by Gerry Duggan (Falling in Love on the Path to Hell) and illustrated by Mark Torres (Cold Spots).

Exploring Overlooked Characters

Oswalt and Blum conceived the anthology series as a way to explore subgenres within the superhero and villain universe. Their previous spin-offs, including The Alternates (psychedelic superheroes), The Brood (a Wes Anderson-style family drama), and Barfly (a punk rock coming-of-age story), showcased their penchant for genre-bending narratives.

“Doing an anthology felt like the perfect way to expand the universe and explore new subgenres within this world of heroes and villains,” Blum shared.

“We focus on stories and characters who would fall through the cracks at Marvel or DC. The underdogs who often get overlooked. Our books are incredibly character-focused, and anthologies really allow you to spotlight one at a time in unique ways.”

Fraction and Allred’s first issue will introduce Benjamin “Brock” Bronkowicz, a washed-up, bird-winged actor who once played a superhero on TV. Now fading into obscurity, Brock spends his days on the superhero convention circuit, trying to capitalize on his fleeting fame while battling personal demons.

A chance encounter with a mysterious woman sets Brock on a path of redemption, empowering him to fight for a life he thought was beyond saving.

From Comics to Netflix

The Minor Threats universe is also heading to Netflix, with a live-action series in development. Oswalt and Blum will serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers, with Dark Horse Entertainment and artist Scott Hepburn also on board as executive producers.

Gerry Duggan, one of the anthology’s contributors, has a long-standing friendship with Oswalt. Their shared love of noir inspired Duggan’s issue. “A ‘cleaner’ in a superhero universe is such a fertile place to tell a story,” Duggan said. “We’re giving our lead some very real problems to deal with—it’s a privilege to collaborate in this shared universe.”

With its unique focus on underdog characters and subgenre exploration, the Minor Threats universe is a vibrant, ever-expanding playground for creators and fans alike. As Oswalt and Blum continue to shape this grand design, the possibilities are as limitless as the universe itself.
